What is the best treatment for pots

Is POTS a serious condition?

POTS is a serious condition that can significantly affect the quality of life, but it’s not usually life-threatening. There is no permanent cure or standardized treatment protocol available for POTS, but various treatment options are available to manage the disease conservatively.

What should you avoid with POTS?

Most experts advise avoidance of alcohol in patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia. Alcohol use prevents blood vessels tightening as usual, stopping the return of the blood to the upper body and the head. This may lead to low blood pressure, dizziness and possibly passing out.

What medications help POTS Syndrome?

The hyperadrenergic form of POTS can be treated by β‐blocking agents or drugs like labetalol, which have both α‐ and β‐receptor blocking effects. In selected patients drugs such as clonidine can be used which act as sympatholytic agents.

Can POTS be treated without medication?

Treating POTS can be tricky, even with a treatment plan that is created by a highly experienced physicians. In my experience, the most effective treatments for POTS syndrome are those that don’t require prescription medication – often referred to as natural, homeopathic, or lifestyle treatments.

How much water should you drink in POTS?

You should drink at least 80 ounces of water throughout the day, more if it’s hot outside or you’re doing sports or exercise. This should be mostly water, some non-fat milk, and a maximum of 8 oz.

What can trigger POTS?

Causes of PoTS
  • hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
  • other underlying conditions – such as diabetes, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, lupus, Sjögren’s syndrome or cancer.
  • poisoning – with alcohol or certain metals.
  • inheriting a faulty gene that causes too much of the “fight or flight” hormone noradrenaline to be produced.

What does a POTS flare up feel like?

POTS is a form of orthostatic intolerance, the development of symptoms that come on when standing up from a reclining position, and that may be relieved by sitting or lying back down. The primary symptom of an orthostatic intolerance is lightheadedness, fainting and an uncomfortable, rapid increase in heartbeat.

What can mimic POTS?

A pheochromocytoma can mimic POTS (or vice versa) because of the paroxysms of hyperadrenergic symptoms including palpitation, although pheochromocytoma patients are more likely to have these symptoms while supine than POTS patients.

Can you reverse POTS?

POTS commonly affects younger patients and is rarely reversible.

Does POTS shorten your life?

Among postural orthostatic hypotension syndrome (POTS) patients, nearly 90% respond to treatment, and there is no evidence of reduced life expectancy. However, quality of life may suffer, with 25% of patients unable to work due to the significant disability the illness can present.

Can POTS affect your vision?

The symptoms of POTS include but are not limited to lightheadedness (occasionally with fainting), difficulty thinking and concentrating (brain fog), fatigue, intolerance of exercise, headache, blurry vision, palpitations, tremor and nausea.

How can I test myself for POTS?

Stand up still as possible for 2 minutes without leaning. Take the pulse while still standing. If there is no significant change in pulse, repeat continue standing up to 10 minutes, taking the pulse every 2 minutes.

What virus causes POTS?

There is some evidence that the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 may also trigger a condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) in people with long-haul COVID-19 (people who have recovered from the initial illness but still have lingering symptoms).

How long do you live with POTS?

The good news is that, although POTS is a chronic condition, about 80 percent of teenagers grow out of it once they reach the end of their teenage years, when the body changes of puberty are finished. Most of the time, POTS symptoms fade away by age 20. Until recovery takes place, treatment can be helpful.

Does magnesium help with POTS?

In some cases, body stockings help, as does exercise, especially strength training of calf muscles. Sometimes, blood pressure medication is indicated. In addition to these measures, I suggest taking supplemental magnesium, which may help slow the rapid heartbeats characteristic of POTS.

Can POTS cause death?

POTS is usually a benign, sometimes self-limiting condition, though rare patients have severe limitation in their activities. Severe autonomic dysfunction may directly cause death. More often, chronic disability increases the patient’s susceptibility to other potentially fatal complications, such as infection.

Is POTS related to Covid?

Some researchers believe that coronavirus can be a trigger for POTS, as an increased number of people who recovered from COVID-19 are now experiencing POTS-like symptoms, such as brain fog, tachycardia (increased heart rate) and severe chronic fatigue.

Can POTS cause stroke?

These antibodies may be directed against clotting factors, platelets, and/or the cells that line blood vessel walls and they cause the blood to be too sticky. This results in an increased risk of blood clots in: 1) Arteries–causing most commonly stroke or heart attack.
