How to know when golf cart batteries are dying

If you notice that the best golf cart batteries are taking even longer to charge, it’s time to replace them. Battery cells will eventually break down over time. The charging power moving through the battery won’t be as effective as before. Some batteries may never fully charge at some point.

Club Car recommends that electric golf car chargers be left plugged in to the golf car during prolonged storage. E-Z-GO recommends that electric golf car chargers remain unplugged from the golf car during prolonged storage.

Don’t Drive Until It Dies

Another common issue is golf cart owners who think that golf cart batteries should only be charged when they’ve become very low. Charge the battery. Letting golf cart batteries run down until near-empty or totally deceased will damage them over time just as much as overcharging them.

Bubbling/Boiling:

A bubbling or boiling sound is entirely normal during the charging process, especially with new batteries, as this is an important process new batteries must undergo to solidify the new lead within the batteries, called curing the lead.

6) Do not overcharge your golf cart batteries.

Batteries should be brought up to full charge at the earliest opportunity. Avoid operating batteries in a partially charged condition. This will reduce their capacity and shorten their life span.

When charging amperage exceeds the level of the natural absorption rate, the battery may overheat, causing the electrolyte solution to bubble creating flammable hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas, when combined with oxygen from the air, is highly explosive and can easily be ignited by a spark.

If your battery does have cell caps, they must be removed before you begin charging, otherwise gases created by charging will not be able to escape into the atmosphere. Make sure that the car is turned off and then attach the cables or the wires to the battery terminals.

If the battery voltage is between 10V and 12V, you can consider reconditioning the dead battery. Many car owners are spending lot of money to replace the dead batteries. However, they can refurbish the dead batteries at home with simple DIY kits.

Yes it is normal for them to bubble. When a lead acid battery is being charged hydrogen gas is produced. That is why you should always be cautious when removing cables after charging. Make sure charger is off and adequate ventilation.

Even though there is no risk of overcharging with the use of a high quality charger, the battery should not remain connected to the charger for more than 24 hours. A full charge is usually achieved by charging overnight. Even after a deep discharge, some chargers enable at least partial reconditioning of the battery.

A fully charged battery will typically display a voltmeter reading of about 12.6 to 12.8 volts. If your voltmeter is showing a voltage anywhere between 12.4 and 12.8, that means your battery is in good shape. Any voltage above 12.9 volts is a good indicator that your battery has excessive voltage.

The chemistry of the battery utilizes liquid SOCl2 and gaseous SO2. What you are hearing is bubbles of sulfur dioxide churning around with the liquid thionyl chloride. I would recommend that you not shake them, and you won’t hear a thing.

Or the electrical system may be overcharging. The battery gets hot and the electrolyte evaporates off. Some batteries are sealed and cannot be topped up. But if yours has removable plugs take them out and top up with deionised water to about 5mm above the level of the plates.

Usually there is a clear “eye” on the top of the battery that displays a green light if the water level is good and a dark light if the battery needs water. Be sure to use distilled water.

SITUATION: Battery gets warm or hot to the touch. Sometimes a battery that is getting warm will make popping sounds as the internal fluid starts to boil or gas is produced.
