CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
to the Study
Information
is very important in any society it is a veritable tool in the realization of
individual, corporate and societal objectives or goal. Goldfrab (2006) opined
that information is a valuable resource required in any society; thus acquiring
and using information are critical and important activities. Users of information
use it for different reasons. Some use it for health; others use it for
advancement in knowledge, others for politics, promoting culture and values.
Radio
came to be as a result of the invention of technology, therefore the history of
radio in Nigeria started way back with British Broadcasting Corporation. Radio
broadcasting was introduced into Nigeria in 1933 by the then colonial
government, it relayed the overseas service of the British Broadcasting
Corporation through wired system with loudspeakers at the listening end. The
service was called Radio Diffusion System (RDS). From the RDS emerged the
Nigeria Broadcasting Service (NBS) in April 1951.Mr T.W Chamlers, a Briton and
controller of the BBC Light Entertainment programme was the first Director
–General of the NBS. The Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation, NBC came into being
in April 1957 through an act of parliament No.39 of 1956 and the Director General
was Mr. J.A.C Knott Obe. In 1978, the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation was
re-organized to become the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN
(http://ww2.radionigeria.gov.ng. April 24, 2012. Page one).
The
radio media of the most sophisticated means of communication and disseminating
information has the most impact in the formation of the cultural, social and
economic system. The most important role of the radio can be found in
information transmission and public enlightenment and providing knowledge and
insight to the people society in such a way that the field most of the
developments and social change despite. One of the areas that the radio can be
in shaping to be effective structures and its new human environmental
practices; the urban tissue and in the form of and values is the culture of
citizenship the conceptual citizenship and pause and an observer to the overall
style of urban human life. Culture and consequently acquired the citizenship
phenomenon, culture transfer possible, dynamic. achievements of civilization
fan the status of citizenship with such concepts as culture, media literacy,
technology, globalization and the new culture and a new interpretation of the
culture-changing citizenship has shaped not only the format used for the past
but also with an intense desire to change and that there is a time to keep is
in transformation (Zahedi et al. 2013).
1.2 Statement
of the Problem
Advent
of radio have tremendously transformed the way information is disseminated,
prior to its invention, people most especially in primitive Africa society had
their peculiar way of disseminating information such as the use of town criers
and assembling people in strategic locations in the village such as market
square to disseminate information to them e.g. In primitive Yoruba society,
different signs and objects were used to disseminate information, and teach
cultural and family values. Colonial masters brought radio to ease their
administration and ever since it has been to pass information from government
to the citizen and people use it to disseminate social and religious programs,
teach the young and old one cultural values of different tribes and society
because of its capability to reach large audience. Advancement in information
and communication technology has brought other means of information
dissemination such as television, internet, mobile phones, fax, telex, telegram
among other which now serve as a competitors for radio, there the capability
and the power of radio has be reduced since most people now prefer to watch TV,
use their phones etc., it is against this problem that the researcher decides
to conduct a research on the effectiveness of radio in promoting family values
and norms.
1.3 Objectives
of the Study
The
main objectives of this study is to find out the effect of radio in promoting
family values, specifically the study intends to;
1. Find
out the impact of transmitting information through radio
2. Examine
the effects of promoting family values and norms
3. Analyze
the effect of promoting family values and norms through radio
4. Find
out the most effective way of promoting family values and norms
1.4 Research
Questions
1. What
is the impact of transmitting information through radio stations on the society?
2. What
is the effects of promoting family values and norms?
3. Is
there any effect of promoting family values and norms through radio?
4. What
is the most effective way of promoting family values and norms?
1.5 Significance
of the Study
This
research work will be significant in many ways, the findings will be of great
importance to the society and by teaching them on the values of promoting the
family and cultural values and norms.
This
research work will be of help to radio stations by exposing them to the
challenges they might encounter and the society views about them, also the
research work will also be of help to other student and researchers by guiding
them in the course of writing another research of the same topic.
1.6 Scope
of the Study
This
research work will be conducted in Ekiti state, Ado the state capital will be
used as the location for the research.
1.7 Delimitation
of the Study
Finance for the general research work will be a
challenge during the course of study. Correspondents also might not be able to
complete or willing to submit the questionnaires given to them.
However, it is believed that these constraints will
be worked on by making the best use of the available materials and spending
more than the necessary time in the research work. Therefore, it is strongly
believed that despite these constraint, its effect on this research report will
be minimal, thus, making the objective and significance of the study
achievable.
1.8 Definition
of Terms
Promoting: support or actively encourage (a cause,
venture, etc.); further the progress of
Radio: the transmission and reception of
electromagnetic waves of radio frequency, especially those carrying sound
messages.
Values and Norms: refers to attitudes and behaviors that are
considered normal, typical or average within that group. All societies have
cultural norms. Even though norms influence every facet
of our lives, including what we value, our attitudes, and how we
