Bernard Fanning (born August 15, 1969) is an Australian musician and singer-songwriter who has released many albums. He is most known for his work as the lead vocalist and frontman of the Australian alternative rock band Powderfinger, which he joined in 1989 and remained with until its breakup in 2010. Fanning was born and reared in the Brisbane suburb of Toowong, where he was taught to play the piano by his mother at a young age. Fanning started composing music when he was 12 years old while attending St. Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace.
After graduating from St. Joseph’s, he went on to the University of Queensland, where he briefly studied journalism before returning to St. Joseph’s College. After meeting Ian Haug in an economics lecture, he decided to leave school to pursue a music career. He would later regret his decision. Having just founded Powderfinger, Fanning teamed forces with fellow musicians Haug, John Collins, and Steven Bishop, and took on the position of lead vocalist.
Following Bishop’s departure and the addition of guitarist Darren Middleton, the band would go on to produce five studio albums over the course of fifteen years and reach mainstream recognition in Australia. As part of Powderfinger’s sabbatical in 2005, Fanning embarked on a solo musical journey with the release of the studio album Tea & Sympathy.
