Apparently, the Internet really does not forget, and this could not be truer than for the famous and talented American director James Gunn from the Guardians of Galaxy – the fictional superhero TV series. He’d cracked some not-so-funny jokes about sensitive subjects like rape, pedophilia, and child abuse between 2008 and 2012, when he was much younger and still trying to make his mark in the industry, and years later.
Why was James Gunn fired?
The dust was raised after he consistently attacked US President Donald Trump’s policies, prompting a stampede on his Twitter account, which has seen the President’s supporters dig up some inappropriate tweets he had penned in the past. These tweets bordered on sensitive issues such as rape, homosexuality, and child abuse, and watered down the consequences of those issues in an attempt at comic relief. With that revelation, the pressure was on Disney to relieve him of his duties as screenwriter and director.
The call was persistent and though it was, it was faced with over 350,000 written and signed petitions, including the letter signed by the casts asking for his forgiveness and reinstatement. The Liberal company could not compromise on its politics as it had to let go of one of its most creative writers and directors in the unknown Guardians of Galaxy vol. 1 and 2 from zero obscurity to fame, box office and making stars from little-known actors in the same vein.
The Walt Disney Studios chairman summed it up, “The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are unjustifiable and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our relationship with him.”

Although the embattled director has long since deleted receiving offensive tweets from his account, there was enough time to film them and circulate them in the media. Here’s a look at some of his tweets, including his response when they went into the public domain.
There has been a broad allegation that conspiracy theorist and media personality Mike Cernovich was responsible for digging up his earlier tweets and circulating them in July 2018. However, the film director and screenwriter has graciously accepted his mistakes and apologized unreservedly to those people who had been hurt by his past comments on Twitter. He also thanked the crew and management at Disney Entertainment World for the years and the opportunity to work with them before retiring from the production.
As the saying goes, no one is totally indispensable and this is especially true for a brand that has become a global brand. James Gunn will be replaced, that’s for sure, and Gunn has also found new adventures as he’s been welcomed by one of Disney’s rivals and contenders, Warner Brothers.
James Gunn’s first assignment at his new company, Warner Brothers, would be helping to write the superhero film The Suicide Squad 2, as the talented screenwriter’s contributions will make the film have such an impact that it will garner much-needed positive reviews, which are growing have withdrawn from the first part.
