Alan Sugar is a British businessman, media personality, and politician. Sugar is best known for founding the electronics company Amstrad in 1968, which produced a range of products including computers, audio equipment, and satellite receivers.
Sugar was the chairman and part-owner of Tottenham Hotspur from 1991 to 2001, selling his remaining stake in the club in 2007 as well, for £25m.
He is also known for being the host and “Boss” of the BBC reality competition series The Apprentice, which has been broadcast every year, with the exception of 2020, since 2005.
According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Sugar became a billionaire in 2015. In 2021, his fortune was estimated at £1.21bn, ranking him as the 138th-richest person in the UK.
Why is Alan Sugar a Lord?
In 2009, the UK government granted Alan Sugar a life peerage and bestowed upon him the title of Lord Sugar of Clapton in the London Borough of Hackney. The award was given to Sugar in appreciation for his achievements in UK business and philanthropy.
As a life peer, Sugar is entitled to sit in the House of Lords, the upper chamber of the UK Parliament, and contribute to debates and legislative activities. He is also able to use the title “Lord” as a form of address. However, it is worth noting that Sugar is an independent member of the House of Lords and does not align himself with any political party.
In particular, Sugar was recognized for his work as the founder and chairman of the electronics and computer equipment manufacturer Amstrad as well as his contributions to the UK economy as a savvy businessman and investor.
He was also honoured for his humanitarian activities, which included his assistance with programs for healthcare and education both domestically and overseas.
What did Alan Sugar invent?
One of Sugar’s earliest and most well-known ventures was Amstrad, a company he founded in 1968 that produced consumer electronics such as radios, hi-fi systems, and televisions.
In the 1980s, Amstrad became one of the leading computer manufacturers in the UK, producing popular models such as the Amstrad CPC and the Amstrad PCW. Sugar also founded and led several other successful companies throughout his career, including Viglen, Amsair, and Amsprop.
