On 20 October 1998, Christopher McWilliams, John Glennon, and John Kennaway were convicted of murdering Billy Wright, possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life. The three men had pleaded not guilty.

The judgment has been issued in respect of mid Ulster loyalists Alan Oliver, Anthony McNeill and Thomas Harper. Oliver is a suspected British agent who played a central role in the Mid Ulster UVF, which was responsible for dozens of sectarian murders.

Wright was a minor media personality, and his marriage to Joy Beverley of the Beverley Sisters occurred at a time long before the era of footballers being known for having celebrity girlfriends. This was in July 1958, by which time Wright was 34, and proved one of the most successful showbiz marriages.

A true one-club man, Wright spent his entire club career in gold and black, becoming the first footballer in the world to earn 100 international caps and captaining his country a record 90 times.

This became a record, adding on to the record which made him the first footballer to achieve 100 caps. Wright still remains the ninth most capped English player. Wright played a total of 105 games for England, scoring 3 goals and being an ever present part of the squad.
