In Tuesday’s general election, Tyrone Garner defeated David Alvey by a razor-thin margin, becoming Kansas City’s second straight challenger to upset the incumbent mayor.
While the results are unofficial, Garner received 8,243 votes, compared to 7,934 for Alvey.
Garner becomes the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City’s fifth mayor. Since the governments merged in 1997, he has been the first Black mayor to lead the UG.
Garner won by little over 300 votes, demonstrating how tight the mayoral contest was this year.
Garner, 52, has served in the Kansas City Police Department for 32 years, beginning as a cadet after graduating from high school.
He has also served on the Kansas City Community College and the Kansas City Housing Authority boards.
During this mayoral election cycle, both candidates felt the dissatisfaction and impatience of citizens who were fed up with the way things had been going in Wyandotte County for the past few years.
“I want to say there was significantly more rage than we have ever encountered before,” Alvey told reporters Tuesday night.
Garner used that rage, knowing what concerns residents were upset about, such as high taxes, a high Board of Public utility bill, and a lack of growth east of Interstate 635, particularly in the northeast.
