Normalize Leah Tutu was born in Krugersdorp in 1933 as Nomalizo Leah Shenxane. On July 2, 1955, she married Desmond Tutu.

Leah works as both a teacher and a nurse. She served as an assistant to the registrar at the Universities of Botswana, Lesotho, and Swaziland between 1970 and 1972.

She was a founding member of the South African Domestic Workers Association. From 1976 until 1984, she was the director of the South African Institute of Race Relations’ Domestic Workers and Employers Project.

In 1988, she co-founded the Desmond Tutu Peace Center. She gives talks to a variety of churches and women’s groups.
