Nazeri bin Lajim, a 64-year-old Singaporean, has only a few hours to live. Singapore plans to execute him in the early hours of Friday morning. The prison informed his family seven days in advance.
Singapore’s 2022 is shaping up to be a brutal year as authorities speed up executions. Four men have already been hanged for drug offenses this year; if it hadn’t been for last-minute court applications that resulted in stays of execution or respite orders issued by the President, the state would have executed four more.
Who Is Nazeri Bin Lajim? Singapore Capital Punishment
Nazeri Bin, 64, is a former drug trafficker. He began taking MX pills (known as Quaaludes in the United States) when he was only 14 years old. Nazeri was already using heroin when the law changed in 1975 to include the death penalty for illegal drug possession. He was only sixteen years old.
Successive Singapore governments have claimed that the harsh penalties in the Misuse of Drugs Act are intended to serve as a deterrent. They say we should think about the people whose lives have been ruined by drugs. Nazeri is one such person.
Nazeri, on the other hand, was repeatedly arrested and punished instead of receiving help and treatment. Nazira estimates that he has spent roughly 3/4 of his life incarcerated. It irritated her that he would relapse every time he was released.
According to his sister Nazira, his main flaw is that he is weak-willed and easily swayed, but he is fundamentally a good person.
The state regards Nazeri as nothing more than a drug trafficker who does not deserve to live. Nazira sees the whole person who is a brother, husband, and father who loves and is loved.

Why Was Nazeri Lajim Arrested? Execution And Hanging Date
Nazeri got apprehended with two drug bundles in his possession. They were eventually charged with the capital offense of heroin trafficking in excess of 15g.
He did not deny having intended to sell the drugs. Nazeri also claimed at trial that he had consumed more heroin than he had stated in his police statement. He claimed that he was told to reduce the amount because the police did not believe he had consumed that much heroin.
On September 21, 2017, he got sentenced to death. His co-accused was discovered to be a courier, and the prosecution granted him a Certificate of Substantive Assistance, allowing the court to sentence him to life in prison with caning instead.
Furthermore, Lajim’s execution date has been set for July 22, 2022. It is the ninth execution of the year. He will be hanged in the early hours of Friday morning. Even as the state cracks down on such dissent, calls for the death penalty to be abolished are more urgent than ever.
Nazeri Bin Lajim Wife And Family
When the British troops left Singapore in the 1970s, the drug trafficker family’s father, who had been an army administrator, lost his position and went from living a luxurious life to one of extreme poverty. When Nazira and Nazeri were teenagers, their father passed away.
According to his sister Nazita, life at home was extremely difficult. Their mother, a housewife who was suddenly left to feed nine children on her own, was forced to work multiple jobs. Sometimes the family’s only source of food was the generosity of neighbors and donations from the church community.
His younger sister Nazira considers him to be her favorite brother. He is soft-spoken, gentle, and well-dressed, just like their father.
Nazira loves her brother. She is frustrated with him for not being able to stop using drugs, even though she recognizes that addiction is a disease that requires treatment. She feels guilty for not assisting him sooner. She is terrified of what he is about to face.
His sister and ex-wife Sheila visit him while on death row. Sheila is his most frequent visitor. She describes their bond as “extremely close.” Nazeri also enjoys visits from their son, whom he is very proud of, and his stepdaughter.
