On March 13, 1995, Mikaela was born in Vail, Colorado, the United States as the second child of Eileen and Jeff Shiffrin. As the native of Northeastern United States, Jeff and Eileen were expert skiers, and, with that blood in her veins along with professional training, she made her world cup debut on March 11, 2011.
Back in the days, Jeff was an avid skier who visited Vermont on weekends with his family and raced for Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, while her mother Eileen raced in high school in northwestern Massachusetts in the Berkshires.
Similarly, her brother Taylor raced for the University of Denver.

On February 2, 2020, 65-year-old Jeff Shiffrin lost his life in an accident at the family home in Colorado.
A head injury took his life unexpectedly, creating an unfillable void in Mikaela and her family’s life.

On the day of his demise, she shared a painful statement via her social media that read, “My family is heartbroken beyond comprehension about the unexpected passing of my kindhearted, loving, caring, patient, wonderful father. Our mountains, our ocean, our sunrise, our heart, our soul, our everything. He taught us so many valuable lessons … but above everything else, he taught us the golden rule: be nice, think first. This is something I will carry with me forever. He was the firm foundation of our family and we miss him terribly … Thank you, from the depths of my heart, for respecting my family’s privacy as we grieve during this unimaginable and devastating time.”
