Former Dentist Michael Putnam of Topeka was detained over the weekend on suspicion that he had been working without a license.
The patient accused him of conducting a surgical tooth extraction without an assistant, which further required suction and tongue retraction.
According to the documentation, Putnam’s license was suspended because he failed to extract a root tip, failed to take a post-extraction X-ray, and damaged the buccal bone and mouth floor.

According to the Shawnee County Department of Corrections’ booking records, the Topeka Police Department took him into custody on Saturday. He is charged with allegations of operating a dental practice without a license.
Court records stated that Putnam was the subject of an arrest warrant issued on June 24 as a result of his failure to show up for a motion hearing in Shawnee County District Court.
Putnam is accused of three misdemeanor counts of false impersonation, which date back to December 2021, according to court documents. According to Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay, the accusations are related to claims that the defendant practiced dentistry without a current dental license.

These claims include filthy office conditions, a lack of professionalism, him hurling dental instruments at patients while performing exams, leaving a lot of cement on a patient’s teeth, placing his bare hands into a patient’s mouth, and being “unreasonably upset” at the time.
In the course of an investigation in 2016, he allegedly threw his glasses and struck a wall and a door with his fist while claiming the investigator was attempting to “destroy him.”
Other accusations indicate that patients received excessive amounts of oxycodone and lidocaine, and the dentist failed to maintain appropriate records of the distribution of opioids.
