Marc Murphy is a famous and now-retired Australian rules football player. The athlete was known for playing for the Carlton Football Club in the Australian Football League.
Australian Rules Football is different from American Football and soccer. It is different from the former as it is a contact sport without much overall protective gear, and it is different from the latter as it is a contact sport played with one’s hands.
Points are scored in the game by kicking an oval ball between the central goal posts or between a central and outer post. The former garners six points and the latter one. Murphy played the sport from 2006 to 2021. He started his career when he was recruited with the first overall selection in the 2005 AFL Draft.
He served as captain of Carlton from 2013 to 2018. Lastly, he is also the son of John Murphy, another former Australian rules Football player.

Learn More About Marc Murphy’s Family
Marc Murphy was born on July 19, 1987, to famed retired Australian rules Football player John Murphy.
John Murphy was born on November 20, 1949, and played in the Australian Football League back when it was called the Victorian Football League.
The former athlete debuted in 1967 with Fitzroy Football club after he had been recruited from the Diamond Valley Football League club, Heidelberg. After debuting, Murphy set the record for consecutive games played the debut, which would total 158 matches.
Murphy would hold this record until 2005, when Sydney’s Jared Crouch surpassed it. He played for the Fitzroy Football Club for ten years, from 1967 to 1977, and became the team captain in 1973, which he held until he left the club at the end of the 1977 season.
By the time Murphy left the team, he had played 214 games and won five Fitzroy Club Championships. The reason behind Murphy’s departure was sadly due to internal disputes with the club over some comments he made about other players in the team who, he thought, didn’t deserve their place.
After leaving the Fitzroy Football Club, Murphy moved to South Melbourne in 1978 and played there for one season and a half. He played in 23 games and made 40 goals but changed clubs late in the 1979 season after choosing to move to North Melbourne, where he played his first-ever finals match.
He only played nine games for North Melbourne and made eight goals, but sadly retired from the Victorian Football League in 1980 after injuries.
No longer able to compete in the league, Murphy moved to Tasmania to play in the position of captain-coach in Ulverstone in the North Western Football Union, where he won the Wander Medal as the league’s best and fairest. After his playing career ended, the athlete had two coaching stints in the Victorian Football League.
First, he coached the team Werribee briefly from 1983 to 1985 but didn’t see much success in the team.
Then, he took a bit of a break and returned in 1993 to coach the Box Hill Football coach, a position he retained till 1998, making him the club’s longest-serving coach. Murphy was a very successful coach and coached the club to its first Division One grand final in the Victorian Football League in 1994.
Sadly, Sandringham defeated Box Hill by a narrow margin of nine points. Still, Murphy’s contributions are remembered as he received a lifetime membership of the Box Hill Football Club in 1998.
The former athlete works as the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League’s Dispute Settlement Officer.
In 2006, the Australian Football League inducted him into their Australian Football Hall of Fame. However, the Murphy family’s dominance in Football goes back even further, as John Murphy’s father, Leo Francis Murphy, was an esteemed football player too.
Leo Murphy, born on August 7, 1909, was an Australian rules Football player who played for the team Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League during the 1930s. The old athlete played 132 games for the team, scoring 22 goals. He passed away on April 5, 1999.

How Much Is Marc Murphy’s Net Worth?
The Australian rules Football player Marc Murphy has an estimated net worth of $5 million as of 2022.
The athlete had come a long way from playing for the Beverley Hills Junior Football Club and Doncaster Football Club as a child.
However, Murphy was always meant to succeed. He represented the victorious Vic Metro team at the 2005 Australian Football League Under 18 Championships, where he won the Larke Medal as the tournament’s best player.
Since he was John Murphy’s son, Marc had the option to join the Brisbane Lions under the father-son rule.
However, looking to make his legacy and not wanting to leave Melbourne, Murphy eventually declined the offer. Carlton swooped in and took Murphy in the 2005 AFL National draft with the first overall draft pick as a priority pick.
He made his AFL debut right away in the first round of the 2006 season against Melbourne at the Telstra Dome. Murphy immediately showed his immense talent with 17 disposals, 11 kicks, and six handbells, alongside his first career goal.
These achievements earned him a NAB AFL Rising Star award nomination, and Murphy impressed pundits in his first season enough that he was an early favorite for the Rising Star award. Sadly, his first season was also mired with some tragedy as he sustained a season-ending shoulder injury just in round 13 against the Brisbane Lions.
The injury effectively ended any chance of Murphy winning the award. Still, though he only played twelve full games, the athlete led Carlton in assists for the season, which led him to win Carlton’s Best First-Year Player award.
His peers celebrated his skills, too, as they voted him as the AFL Player Association’s Best First-Year Player.
Despite an inauspicious first season, Murphy showcased his seriousness by replicating his good form in the 2007 season. Even though his injury was used by the opposition to pull him down, his form remained solid.
He bulked considerably in the 2008 season and dominated the field for over a decade and a half and 300 games. Murphy is remembered as one of the greatest ever to do it in Australian rules Football, and his absence is sorely missed not only by Carlton fans but fans of Australian rules Football all over.
