Mai Do Burrous’ story began at the end of April 1975; when the Vietnam War was finally over. However, for Mai who was 2 at the time, her journey was just beginning. She, along with her mother, had made her way to Saigon, eager to escape from the Vietnamese communist power that would be taking over shortly. Leaving with the American soldiers was the most important thing her mother set to accomplish at the time. Her father, at the time, was a doctoral student in California.

Mai Do Burrous was able to flee Vietnam, along with her mother, to the United States of America where she had a peaceful childhood. According to the documentary titled Mai Do-Burrous: Escape From Vietnam, her mother cried when they finally boarded a plane to Guam courtesy of two US Marines who recognized her when they saw her at the airport desperate to find a ride out of Vietnam. Mai was reunited with her father, Sang Do, and they began a new life in Cleveland, Ohio. They became nationalized and moved to Northridge near Los Angeles. Mai grew up to become a reporter and she met her late husband in the first station she worked for, KGET.

Mai Do Burrous fell in love with Chris Burrous, her late husband when they worked together and they were married for fifteen years. The couple met in 1999 when Chris Burrous joined KGET in Bakersfield, California, where Mai was working as a journalist. They started dating and married in a secret wedding.

Who Was Her Husband?

Chris Burrous, the son of a farmer and a NASA engineer, launched his two-decade career after graduating from Chapman University with a degree in broadcast journalism. Born on the 11th of January, 1975, Chris Burrous’s hometown was in Porter Ranch, Los Angeles. While still attending University, he began his broadcasting career in Southern California at KCKC-AM and KCXX-FM in San Bernardino. KNTV-TV and KLIV-AM in San Jose, California, were next, followed by morning and evening anchoring duties at KEVN-TV in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Before joining KTLA in 2011, Chris worked as an anchor at its sister station in New York City, WPIX, and reported at several other stations throughout California. A true fixture at KTLA, Chris helped develop the station’s Weekend Morning News upon his arrival, shaping the program with his signature humor and unpredictability as an anchor. He also highlighted Southern California’s best hole-in-the-wall eateries in his weekend Burrous’ Bites segments. Chris also helped lead coverage on the region’s devastating wildfires, as well as the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks.

Mai Do Burrous’ husband, Chris, had worked at KTLA for seven years at the time of his death; he had asked for a transfer to California from where he had been working at the New York Daily News in the early 2000s because he wanted his daughter to grow up near her grandparents.

Chris died on the 27th of December, 2018 from what the coroner called methamphetamine toxicity. Other contributing factors in his death included hypertension and heart disease. He was found unresponsive at a Days Inn in Glendale after a man he was with called authorities around 1:15 PM to report that he had passed out and was possibly not breathing. Paramedics administered CPR before transporting him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Where Is Chris & Mai Do Burros’ Daughter?

During an emotional memorial service held on the late broadcaster’s birthday, Mai and Chris’ daughter, Isabella, said her father’s memory would always remain with her. Isabella is still young and is assumed to still be attending school. Her parents did a good job of keeping her information private as there is no concrete information about her whereabouts. However, to hazard a guess, it is safe to say she’s still with her mother Mai Do Burrous, attending school like most kids her age.
