If convicted of first-degree murder, Rittenhouse faces the death penalty. His lawyers claim he shot in self-defense after being chased and attacked by a crowd of demonstrators after shooting Rosenbaum, who they claim had previously chased and threatened to murder Rittenhouse.

Kariann Swart, an Illinois native, met Rosenbaum and began a romantic engagement with him in August of 2019. “He’s a very energetic person,” she said about Rosenbaum.

Rosenbaum was originally from Waco, Texas, and had recently relocated to Kenosha around the time they met to be closer to his daughter who resided there, Swart added. When she and Rosenbaum met, they were both homeless, and they shared a motel room in the Kenosha region at the time of his death.

He carried a plastic bag from the hospital that Swart claims had toiletries, socks, medical paperwork, and an empty plastic water bottle, which he threw at Rittenhouse before he was shot. Balch testified he initially suspected they might contain chemicals for a homemade bomb.

Corey Chirafisi, a Madison defense attorney, unsuccessfully petitioned Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Schroeder to enable Rittenhouse’s defense to inform the jury that Rosenbaum had been released from the Milwaukee hospital’s mental health section.

The judge permitted Chirafisi to ask Swart about the medications Rosenbaum was prescribed, and she confirmed that he was receiving bipolar disorder medications and sleep aid.
