Who is Hugh Grant?

Hugh Grant was born Hugh John Mungo Grant in Hammersmith, London, United Kingdom, on the 9th of September 1960. His father, Captain James Murray Grant, served as an officer in the Seaforth Highlanders in Malaya and Germany for eight years, after which he ran a successful carpet business while his mother, Fynvola Susan MacLean, was a schoolteacher who taught Latin, French, and music in the state schools of west London for over three decades.

Grant was raised in Hammersmith where he attended St Peter’s Primary School before later being transferred to Wetherby School. He later got a scholarship that allowed him to go to Latymer Upper School. While there, he participated in extracurricular activities such as cricket and football.

Hugh Grant went on to win a Galsworthy scholarship at New College, Oxford where he graduated from. It was during his time studying there that he debuted in the film, Privileged, which was produced by the Oxford University Film Foundation. He was later offered an admission to study for his Doctorate at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, but turned it down as he had no grant at the time.

Career

In what would be his earliest steps into a life-long acting career, Hugh Grant joined the Oxford University Dramatic Society and starred in one of the Society’s most successful tours for the production of the film, Twelfth Night. He worked as an assistant groundsman at Fulham Football Club, tutored, wrote comedy sketches for TV shows, and also wrote and produced radio commercials.
