The daughter of a housewife mother, and a father who was in sales and marketing, Gwendoline spent her childhood on the South Downs, and was ken on gymnastics as a child, but a spinal injury forced to quit her dreams of becoming a professional gymnast. Fortunately Gwendoline found acting, and after leaving high school, finished drama studies in the Drama Centre, London in 2005.

Before she made her acting debut, Gwendoline was a model for the photographer Polly Borland, who took mostly nude pictures of her from 2002 until 2008 to create the “Bunny” series. However, Gwendoline, under the guidance of famed actor and author Simon Callow, made her acting debut on stage in the play “Pravda” as Cindy, at the Chichester Festival Theatre, and continued with stage roles such as Ortensia in the play “Mirandolina” (2006), then as the Queen in “Cymbeline” performed at the Barbican Theatre, and was Mag Wildwood in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” (2009), performed at Theatre Royal Haymarket, both in London, and in 2010 she was Lucifer in the play “Dr. Faustus”, at Royal Exchange, Manchester, among other portrayals, all of which contributed significantly to her wealth.

Following these successful stage appearances, Gwendoline began pursuing screen roles, and in 2007 obtained the female lead in the film “The Time Surgeon”, and two years later featured in the fantasy adventure film “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”, starring Christopher Plummer, Lily Cole, and Heath Ledger. However, it was in 2012 that Gwendoline acquired world fame when she was chosen for the part of the warrior Brienne of Tarth in the HBO TV’s fantasy drama series “Game of Thrones”, based on the book series “A Song of Ice and Fire” by George R. R. Martin.

Gwendoline, had dreamt of portraying the character after reading the books, and came to audition well-prepared, so winning the role unanimously with producers and casting directors. To further prepare for the role, Gwendoline started taking horsemanship lessons, with the addition of sword-fighting and stage-fighting classes. She made her debut appearance in the series in the third episode of the second season, and since then has featured in 37 episodes, significantly increasing her net worth, as well as her popularity.

The same year, she played Lexi/Lucy in the TV action drama series “Wizards vs. Aliens” (2012-2013), while in 2015 she was chosen for the part of Commander Lyme in the final film in The Hunger Games series, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2”, which further increased her potential net worth, since the film grossed over $650 million. The same year Gwendoline also played one of the antagonists, Captain Phasma, in the new Star Wars trilogy, “Star Force: Force Awakens”, and reprised her role in the sequel “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” in 2017, which added a considerable amount to her net worth, since the films grossed a total of over $3 billion at the box office.

Most recently, she was chosen for the role of Miranda Hilmarson in the TV crime-drama series “Top of the Lake” (2017), while she is now working on several films, including the sci-fi thriller “The Darkest Minds”, and the horror film “In Fabric”, both scheduled for release late in 2018.

When it comes to her personal life, Gwendoline has been in a relationship with fashion designer Giles Deacon since 2013.

Quote
1 I was a semi-professional gymnast as a child. I did rhythmic gymnastics, but I sustained an injury and strained all the muscles in my spine.
2 ‘Game of Thrones’ is a fantasy show not dedicated to any specific time, but it seems to exist in sort of a 1400s medieval fantasy world, and in that setting, I wouldn’t have had a six-pack.
3 I’m certainly really rather tall at 6 foot 3, and I’ve been this way since I was 14, but for years, women who are even 5 foot 10 have come up to me in the street and said, ‘Oh, it’s so nice to see a woman who is taller than me. I’ve always felt like a giant.’
4 Genuine and true love is so rare that when you encounter it in any form, it’s a wonderful thing, to be utterly cherished in whatever form it takes.
5 Part of the reason why I love acting is that you do hope that somehow your work will connect to people and somehow expand their consciousness somewhat, and being able to challenge notions of prejudice through work – through my work – is really thrilling.
6 As a woman, we all want to feel attractive. We all want to feel that we’re making the very best of ourselves so we can accept ourselves.
7 I don’t know, so much of women’s femininity is tied up with their hair.
8 I don’t really have any interest in playing the same part again and again. Let’s just keep everything crossed that doesn’t happen.
Fact
1 Several inches taller than towering leading ladies like Uma Thurman and Sigourney Weaver, she is one of a small handful of professional actresses with a successful film & TV career who stands over 6 feet tall. Another is fellow Brit Janet McTeer, who is 6’1″.
