Gary Ballance Racism Allegation Explained

Gary Ballance admitted to racism allegations against him earlier this month. Following that, the England board suspended his selection for the nation.

He spoke about regretting the use of language during his younger years against his former playing mate, Azeem Rafiq. However, he did say that he used the words in a friendly verbal attack, without any malice or intentions to offend someone, between friends.

Gary also added that he was incredibly close friends with Rafa over the years. He accepted the whole thing and said that he regretted doing it, but never did he think that his actions caused distress to his friend.

On 16 November 2021, Azeem said that the inhumane racial abuse (not from Gary only, but the Yorkshire County Cricket Club) cost him his cricketing career. He shared his experience in front of MPs, Tuesday. He said that he left Yorkshire for the first time in 2014 due to deteriorating mental health. After his return, players and the staff around him constantly used the term “Paki,” referring to his origin.

He also stated that Gary said, “You know he’s a Paki” in front of teammates and coaching staff and mentioned their relationship was toxic by 2017. To answer the chair Julian Knight’s question on the term “Kevin,” he said it was offensive/racist.

As per him, Ballance used it for describing anyone of color in a very derogatory manner. What’s surprising is that it was an open secret in the England dressing room. Similarly, he also disclosed that Gary and Alex Hales became good friends while playing for England. And apparently, Hales named his dog Steve as it was black.
