According to the New York Daily News, Vito Bauza stabbed him to death in Bay Ridge the day after Thanksgiving in a jealous rage because his new girlfriend got him a fresh new coat.
Diaz and his assailant had been in a relationship for over two decades. They had an unusual arrangement in which Bauza, who hails from a wealthy family, functioned as godfather to Diaz’s children and helped fund the victim’s expenditures.
Diaz, who had previously worked as a security guard, obtained a job working evenings as an undercover bouncer at a strip club this summer to help support his children.

Suspect Vito Bauza & Charges
Vito Bauza, 56, surrendered on November 27 and was charged with murder and criminal possession of a firearm for allegedly murdering his partner, 40-year-old Ernest Diaz, who had three children with a longstanding girlfriend.
According to a law enforcement source, Bauza revealed to investigators that he had a connection with Diaz and that the two clashed over money previous to the deadly stabbing.
However, it appears that the issue with Diaz’s coat was the final straw that drove Bauza to lash out at the victim.
When Diaz, wearing the coat, arrived at Bauza’s home on 303 99th Street in Bay Ridge, he became agitated. According to the Daily News, Diaz walked into Bauza’s bathroom to shower when he arrived, and after he finished, Bauza stabbed him.
According to video security evidence, Diaz, who was bleeding profusely, attempted to flee, but Bauza hit him in the head in the lobby. When officials arrived, Bauza repeatedly stabbed Diaz, rendering him unconscious and unresponsive.

Shortly after the murder, Diaz’s long-term girlfriend shared photos of him with their children on Facebook, including one of the happy fathers gathered around a Christmas tree with all three children.
