Who are the members of a tribe called Quest? – Everything you need to know

A Tribe Called Quest was an American hip-hop group originally formed in 1985 in St. Albans, Queens, New York, United States and whose founding members were Q-Tip (MC and lead producer), Phife Dawg (MC ), Ali Shaheed Muhammad (DJ and co-producer) and Jarobi White (MC).

They released a total of 6 albums between 1990 and 2016 amidst all the challenges they faced in various eras, including disbanding, members going solo, and even the death of a member. The musical group A Tribe Called Quest has gone dormant, but their music and legacy lives on. Get to know the band members here and what became of them.

Q-Tip

His name was Jonathan William Davis when he was born on April 10, 1970, but would later become Kamaal Ibn John Fareed following his conversion to Islam.

Q-Tip traced its roots to the Jola people of Guinea Bissau according to its DNA analysis. However, her father was from Montserrat in the eastern Caribbean, while her mother was of African-American descent from Alabama.

When he was young, his parents moved to St. Albans, Queens, and he was educated at Murry Bergtraum High School in Manhattan, New York.

His career as we know him started in 1985 when he formed A Tribe Called Quest with his friends. The abstract as he refers to himself would later go solo in his music career in 1998 and produce singles like Living Thing and Breathe and Stop in addition to others. His career has also seen him work as a music producer and disc jockey.

Ali Shaheed Muhammad

Ali was born on August 11, 1970 in Brooklyn, New York. He is recognized as an American hip hop DJ, record producer and rapper.

He formed a music production group called TheUmmah with Jay Dee and Q-Tip but didn’t see the band lasting long. After the group disbanded, he formed an R&B supergroup called Lucy Pearl with Dawn Robinson and Raphael Saadiq and released a few albums.

He however became more popular for his participation in the band A Tribe Called Quest and following the band’s non-existence, Ali Shaheed Muhammad is now said to have co-hosted NPR’s radio show Microphone Check.

Phife Dawg

Unfortunately, Phife is no more. He was born to Cheryl Allison Boyce-Taylor and Walt Taylor on November 20, 1970 in St. Albans, Queens, New York, USA where he grew up as Malik Izaak Taylor.

The rapper was childhood friends with Q-Tip and was instrumental in the success of their musical group’s second album in 1991, titled The Bottom Line Theory. He often addressed social and economic issues in songs on the album and called himself a five-foot assassin.

Phife was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus in May 1990. He revealed this on A Tribe Called Quest’s 3rd album, in which he introduced himself as an “awesome diabetic”. He received a kidney transplant from his wife in 2008, but that attempt failed as he soon required another transplant in 2012.

Death took hold of him on March 22, 2016, at the age of 45, at his home in Contra Costa County, California, due to complications from his diabetes.

Jarobi White

Jarobi left A Tribe Called Quest in 1991 after the release of their debut album People’s Instinctive Journeys and Paths of Rhythm to pursue a career in the culinary arts. He is the youngest member of the music group Quest born on July 1, 1971.

After leaving the group, he continued to DJ Rasta Root and bandmate Phife Dawg until his death in 2016. Although Jarobi did not rap in the A Tribe Called Quest albums, his contributions were more based on the band’s songs. Of 13 music videos credited to the group, he appeared in 5.

Jarobi White returned to the band in 2016 and was part of their latest album, We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service and hit in the album for the first time.
