It is a 2023 American horror film written and directed by Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman, based on the 2016 novel A Nefarious Plot by Steve Deace, an American talk show host.
The film stars Jordan Belfi as Dr. James Martin, a psychologist, who must determine if a convicted inmate, Edward/Nefarious (Sean Patrick Flanery), is faking his alleged demonic possession.
On the day of his scheduled execution, the serial killer starts claiming to be possessed, leading the authorities to call in a psychiatric evaluation.
Now Dr. Martin is tasked with testing the inmate’s sincerity and proving to the authorities that he should suffer the ultimate penalty.
The supernatural thriller also stars Tom Ohmer as Warden Moss, James Healy Jr. as Gate Guard, Eric Hanson as Assistant Warden Anderson, Cameron Arnett as Trustee Styles, and Robert Peters as Dr. Stewart.
Nefarious grossed $1.3 million in its opening weekend from 933 theatres, finishing 10th at the box office.
When Will Nefarious Be Available To Stream?
Nefarious will likely be available to stream by the beginning of June 2023. The movie is shown in selected theatres across major markets.

Yes, Nefarious is a Christian horror movie. It has a strong Christian worldview that dramatically outlines the battle between God and Satan’s world of demonic evil.
For instance, in one scene a character pleads to God and God performs a miracle. God is clearly more powerful. It also has a strong executive scene that needs extreme caution.
It has a few relatively light obscenities and scary conversations with the killer who claims to be a demon.
Nefarious is a faith-based movie and it’s not a surprise, given that other titles writers and directors Chuck and Cary have made, including God’s NotDead (2014) and Unplanned (2019).
Nefarious is a religious horror movie in the sense that “it’s a long insufferable sermon in the shoddy guise of a generic horror film,” said Joshua Kristian Mccoy in Game Rant.
The mission of this anti-tone movie is not to frighten or compel the viewers, it’s to change hearts and minds.
Although it looks like every other possession movie, its full feature is a bit more pious compared to the trailer. The Nefarious demon shows a lot of strong political opinions in the movie.
He occasionally touches on metaphysical issues and often talks about abortion, consensual euthanasia laws, and the death penalty.
He even informs James, that the psychiatrist will kill three people before their meeting ends. It quickly becomes clear that those killings won’t be the traditional sort.
The demon is furious about athletes making money and thinks the concept of hate speech is absurd.
Once Dr. Martin makes it into the interview room with the inmate, the movie settles in for 90 minutes of in-depth debate between a liberal atheist and a demon.
It has received generally positive reviews from viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, the review aggregator, the film has attained an average rating of 4/10 -33% of 15 critics’ reviews are positive.
In addition, it has an impressive average rating of 4.8 out of 5, with a 97% audience score.
The Arizona Republic’s Bill Goodykoontz gave the movie two stars for a possible five. He said the film lacked subtlety and the expressed demonic views were simply a mouthpiece for the filmmakers.
“The film is mostly a set piece staged between Edward and James,” said the media critic.
Nefarious Movie 2023 Streaming Details
Since Nefarious is a horror flick, there is a chance that it ends up on Shudder, which offers the best selection of thriller, horror, and supernatural content.
But the streaming platform generally picks up the streaming right to movies before their release, suggesting if the service wanted the rights to Nefarious it would already have it.
Also, the conservative and religious themes displayed in Nefarious do not fit with the rest of Shudder’s content library.
Other titles from the directors Chuck and Cary have landed on the more religious-themed streamer Pure Fix. However, Nefarious is R-rated horror, and Pure Flix is more focused on family-friendly content.
Considering this, Pure Fix is also not the ideal streaming platform for the film.
The other film from distributor Soli Deo Gloria Releasing was Unplanned, which is now available to stream on Hoopla and Tubi. It is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, and Amazon.
So, there is a possibility that Nefarious might come on a free streaming service once it leaves theatres.
Yet there is little to stop the title from going streaming after the industry standard minimum of 45 days. After that, it won’t be a big theatre earner and have a major studio trying to boost its revenue.
So the movie is expected to be available for rental or purchase on digital platforms like Amazon and Prime Video around a month after its initial theatrical release.
It will likely be available to stream in June 2023, though the date will depend on which (if any) streaming platform owns its digital rights.
