Find out why the mysterious shoe was standing upright in Jordan Peele’s directed ‘Nope’.
Released on July 22, Jordan Peel’s Nope is an ambitious science fiction horror/thriller film that comprises disparate characters and symbols.
The movie currently sits at a 7.6 IMDB rating and a 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie mainly focuses on capturing a UFO, however, there’s another scene that receives quite some screentime. At the end of the film, there is a strange scene where you see a mysterious blue and white shoe standing upright.
The shoe riddle is an important part of the movie’s earliest sequences, later visited in meticulous detail.
What Does The Shoe Standing Up Mean?
Peele’s Nope shows multiple incidents during Gordy’s violent rampage while filming a sitcom. Amid Gordy’s assault, the scene puts so much emphasis on a young woman’s shoe standing upright, along with a few drops of blood on the set.
The shoe scene can be seen as a ‘bad miracle’ given the unexplainable natural phenomenon, and the way it happened, during a tragedy. The shoe incident represents a symbol of protection, for Ricky who got distracted from the Ape’s killing its co-stars. After the horrific incident, Ricky later used that mysterious shoe for a spectacle.
Gordy’s co-stars were staring at him during the tragedy, and they all got killed. However, not Ricky whose focus was shifted towards the standing shoe.
Nope Leaves Audience To Their Imagination
Since no indication has been given to audiences about the mysterious shoe standing up in Nope, the logical reason in the context of the story itself would be, that the odd thing with a shoe grabbed Ricky’s attention as opposed to him looking right at the face of the ape. Ricky would’ve been killed had he focused on looking at the chimpanzee.
It is revealed that Ricky has the shoe in his collection of artifacts from the catastrophe. Despite the chimpanzee being shot dead, the film doesn’t reveal the shoe riddle leaving the audience to their imagination.
Nope’s Ending Explained
Each character in the film was put into a life-threatening situation at the end of the show. Some were putting their lives on the line to capture the alien. As for the cinematographer, Antler, who was willing to put his life at risk to get that perfect shot, met his untimely demise.
OJ realizes that the UFO is a living being and learned it must not be looked straight into its eyes. As this sci-fi horror repeatedly shows how poor animal reacts when people make eye contact with them. His realization helped him survive at the end of the movie.
Being a child actor, Ricky grew up in the spotlight and was treated as a spectacle in his childhood. As Gordy’s incident ended with him giving a fist bump to Ricky,
Ricky misinterpreted the situation thinking he was spared because of the trust. Now, as an adult, Ricky repeats the same mistake of the showrunners during his childhood, treating Jean Jacket as a spectacle just to find himself eaten along with his former co-star, audience, wife, and kids.
It was evident in Ricky’s museum of artifacts, he misinterpreted Gordy’s fist bump as a sign of trust rather not Gordy was treated as a spectacle. While OJ survives the catastrophe, the film marks a sentimental end to Emerald’s journey. However, the film showcase a great ending to this summer blockbuster ‘NOPE’.
