Before obtaining a grant to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Parayko spent his boyhood in St. Albert, Alberta, where he played minor ice hockey with the St. Albert Flyers and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
He went undrafted in his most memorable year of NHL qualification. He got selected 86th overall as a 19-year-old in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues.
