What is the Difference Between Zygote and Gamete

Development is a complex procedure that involves many important steps for its completion. At every step, numerous changes take place in the structural and functional aspects to maintain the state of the fetus required, when the time is right. In the initial stage, the formation of zygotes and gametes plays a vital role in determining the sex of the ovum.

Zygote vs Gamete

The main difference between zygote and gamete is that zygote comprises of two copies of every autosome and the sex chromosomes are present in the form of XX or XY; on the other hand, a gamete has only one copy of the autosomes and one sex chromosome that is either X or Y.

A zygote is known to be the first diploid cell, formed during the fusion of the gametes of male and female, which results in the birth of an embryo. These cells are found in the fallopian tube of the reproductive system in females and after development become a fetus or offspring.

A gamete is the haploid mature germ cells of males and females that can fuse with the germ cells of the opposite sex to form a zygote. During fertilization, both the gametes of males and females come together and form a diploid cell called the zygote. Gametes are also known as the sex cells of an organism.

What is a Zygote?

Zygotes are the first cell that is produced when the male and female gametes fuse and form an embryo. Zygotes are diploid in nature. During the initial stage of fertilization, a zygote is developed. The characteristics of a zygote are determined by the combination of each gamete’s DNA that contains the information required for the formation of an individual.

The genes from both the parents are possessed by the zygote and therefore they are diploid. The fusion of two haploid gametes to give birth to a diploid zygote is a very common characteristic found in the sexual reproduction of all living beings excluding bacteria. After the zygote is produced, it gets attached to the fallopian tube and undergoes numerous events of development, and finally transforms into a fetus.

Zygotes are also considered as the initial stage where the fetus receives its original recognition. In plants, if the fertilization has occurred between meiotically unreduced germ cells then the zygote produced will be polyploid. In embryophytes, commonly known as land plants or embryophyta, a zygote is produced inside a chamber known as the archegonium which is a long bottle-shaped neck structure that acts as a passage for the sperm cells to enter.

What is a Gamete?

The word gamete is derived from an Ancient Greek word “gamein” which means “to marry” A gamete is a haploid cell of a male or a female which fertilizes with the opposite sex gamete to reproduce sexually. Gametes are also known as the reproductive cells of an organism or sex cells. In an organism that produces two different kinds of gametes, and in them every particular organism forms only a single kind, the females in them are the ones who create the gametes that are larger than the others.

They are called an ovum. The male, on the other hand, produces the smaller kind of gametes which are known as sperm cells. Sperm cells, also known as spermatozoa, are generally smaller and mobile due to their tail-like structure flagellum, which lets the cells move. In comparison to this, every egg cell or the ovum are is bigger but non-mobile.

Gametes are the haploid cells that carry the half genetic data of an organism, one set of a chromosome of every type, and are formed by the process of meiosis, which divides the germ cells and produces four gametes out of two. The gametes of male and female place the basis of sexual roles and selection, but the gamete, the offspring produced, decides the sex of that individual.

MainDifferences Between Zygote and Gamete

  1. A zygote is a diploid cell, formed after the fusion of an egg cell and a sperm cell, while a gamete is a cell that fuses to produce a zygote.
  2. A zygote carries the complete genetic data that is required to produce a new living being whereas, a gamete only carries half of the data required.
  3. A zygote contains two copies of every individual autosome and sex chromosomes are in the form of XX and XY whereas, a gamete only has one copy of autosomes and one form of sex chromosome that is either an X or a Y.
  4. Zygotes are located in the fallopian tube inside the reproductive system of a female, while the gametes in males are found in the testis and ovaries in females.
  5. A zygote after development gives rise to a fetus or offspring, while a gamete produces a zygote.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both the cells, gamete, and zygote are interdependent as a zygote cannot exist if the male and female gametes don’t fuse. In the same way, the importance of the gametes will disappear if it doesn’t produce a zygote in the development process.

Many times, the confusion arises due to the numerous steps involved in the process where these two happen to follow the other, which means a zygote appears after the fusion of gametes. Even though the morphology of a zygote and gamete remains the same, these two differ from each other in their structural and functional part.
