What is the Difference Between Pump and Motor

Mechanical systems and machines have been used to perform everyday tasks for hundreds of years now. Mechanical systems use the basic laws of physics to bring about any change in the state or form of any substance or object. Pumps, motors, levers are all examples of mechanical systems that are used every day.

Pump vs Motor

The main difference between a Pump and a Motor is that a Pump is a machine that is used to raise or lower the level of water in a container or any natural water body. On the other hand, a motor is an electro-mechanical device that is used to convert electrical energy into mechanical power.

A Pump is one of the most basic and commonly used mechanical devices. It is excessively used in many everyday operations and is employed in a wide range of scenarios. A pump is a mechanical device that is used to raise or lower the water level in a container or any other form of water body, both natural or man-made.

A Motor is an electro-mechanical device that works on both mechanical and electrical principles. It is one of the most commonly used mechanical devices. A Motor is essentially used to convert electrical energy into mechanical force. Typically this involves the conversion of electric power from an outlet, to some form of mechanical motion.

What is Pump?

Pumps are one of the most commonly used mechanical devices, which are widely used in different scenarios and for performing all the jobs related to fluids. Depending on the type of fluid to be displaced, different types of pumps are available, with different power ratings.

A pump is essentially a device that is used to change the fluid level in a container. The fluid level can be raised or lowered by using a pump. Thus pumps can be used in both natural water bodies, such as rivers, lakes, as well as in man-made water reservoirs.

The water level is changed by changing the flow parameters of the fluid. This is done by bringing the flow of fluid to a halt by employing some form of force to the fluid flow. General compressed air is used to employ the force.

Compressed air is used to create a vacuum inside the pipes and the flow of water or any other type of fluid is brought to a halt. By maintaining the vacuum, the fluid level inside the container can be maintained.

When the air is let go, the vacuum is dispersed and the flow of fluid continues. Thus fluid can easily enter the container without any interruption.

What is Motor?

The motor is one of the most commonly used and the most basic types of mechanical devices. It is used for different applications and is one of the most essential mechanical devices in any type of industry.

A motor is an electro-mechanical device that employs both electric as well as mechanical laws for its operations. Motors are used in almost all types of mechanical systems, such as in electric fans, electric cars, dishwashers, and so on.

A motor converts the electric energy from a source into mechanical power. Usually, the conversion is done from the electric energy of an outlet to some form of motion. It could be rotational motion, reciprocatory motion, or any other type of displacement.

This motion is brought by the change in magnetic fields induced in the rotor of the motor. Electromagnets are present in the motor and the electric energy induces a magnetic field inside the motor.

As the magnetic field is changing, the direction of the spin of the rotor also changes, and thus the electric energy is converted into mechanical motion of the rotor.

This conversion to motion can be easily observed in electric fans, as in an electric fan the electric energy from the source is converted into plain rotation.

Main Differences Between Pump and Motor

  1. A pump is a mechanical device that is used to change the fluid level. A motor is an electro-mechanical device that is used to convert electrical energy into mechanical power
  2. The pump works on the principles of hydrodynamics. Motor works on mechanical and electrical principles
  3. There are two types of pumps, positive displacement, and centrifugal pumps. There are two types of motors, AC and DC motors
  4. Pumps are used to change the flow of fluids by forcing compressed air. Typically a motor converts the electrical energy into some form of motion, like reciprocal motion
  5. Pumps are used to deliver water to houses in a neighborhood, in car washes, in paper mills, and so on. Motors are used in electric fans, dishwashers, electric vehicles, and so on.

Conclusion

Pumps and motors are two of the most commonly and widely used mechanical devices. They are used in almost all types of industries and for doing almost all types of everyday tasks.

Pumps work on the principles of hydrodynamics. They are essentially used to influence the water level in a container, that is either raise or lower the water level in the container.

Motors on the other hand work using the principles of mechanical force and electric energy. It is a type of electromechanical device which is used to convert electric energy into mechanical force. The force is typically brought in the form of motion, which could be reciprocating, rotational, or translational.
