What is the Difference Between Integration and Desegregation

Integration and desegregation are two terms that are often used incorrectly and interchangeably. The differences between integration and desegregation are very wide, with integration being a voluntary way of living in a diverse environment, and desegregation is a forced move from the dominant group. The key difference lies in their enforcement.

Integration vs Desegregation

The main difference between Integration and Desegregation is that integration involves a mixture of people from different ethnicities living together in an environment, while desegregation aims at promoting equality through forced removal of racial barriers. The ideas differ in the fact the first occurs on one’s will while the second is externally enforced.

Integration is when people of different races, people of different backgrounds, people of different tribes, people of different religions, and people of different genders are treated equally and can interact with each other regardless of their differences. Without integration, discrimination would happen, and there would be nothing but chaos and disagreement.

Segregation is the separation of people into racial, ethnic or religious groups in daily life. Desegregation is the end of this separation, either by a legal decree enforcing the constitutional right of citizens to equality or by social pressures. It is a method to enforce equality among people.

Comparison Table Between Integration and Desegregation

What is Integration?

Integration is the process of connecting two things. In business, it’s a process of putting multiple pieces of software together to make one product. In technology, it combines hardware, software, and firmware in some way. In the military, it means to join two forces together, from states to departments to the military and local law enforcement.

In education, it’s the process of taking previously learned facts and theories and bringing them together for more in-depth learning about a subject. Integration can mean that two things are combined, or it can mean the joining of two things, such as two departments.

Integration is the process of bringing two separate things together. It can be as small as bringing two ideas together, two people, or two countries. Integration can happen in schools, homes, businesses, and healthcare. Integration is where two or more cultures come together and share their ideas, traditions, or religions.

The integration in politics is to give an equal chance for people or groups to participate or express their ideas or opinions. It is the process of joining or combining parts or entities. It is the incorporation of different people or groups of people under a common administration. It is the inclusion of various elements or parts.

What is Desegregation?

Desegregation refers to the act of removing policies that discriminate against people based on race. More broadly, it can refer to any action that promotes racial harmony, like affirmative action.

Desegregation is the process of dissolving the barriers that prevent two groups from being equal in society. Desegregation is when laws are passed, or actions are taken to eliminate racial segregation or discrimination. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is an example of federal legislation that enforced desegregation.

Desegregation is when a forced removal of segregation is put into action. The main difference between these two things is that desegregation is an action that is forced upon the people for integration to be used. Since the ’40s, United States schools have been desegregated. This means they’re open to people of all races and are not separated by race.

The process of desegregation began after the Civil Rights movement in an attempt to create equal access to resources for all races. This can refer to a variety of different areas, including schools, restaurants, and businesses. Desegregation is a political issue because it has the power to change the way people interact on a day-to-day basis, and thusly, politics play a role in the process of desegregation.

Main Differences Between Integration and Desegregation

  1. Integration is a much more extreme concept. On the other hand, desegregation is more gradual.
  2. Integration is when all races and cultures come together and live as one. Desegregation is when one dominant culture mixes with the rest of the cultures.
  3. In integration, the cultural difference is not taken into account, and all are to be together. Desegregation does consider diverse cultures and is forced to be together.
  4. While segregation is often thought of as a negative thing, desegregation is not as socially accepted as integration.
  5. Integration promotes the feeling of unity while desegregation almost forces it, which may give rise to resentment in the long term.

Conclusion

Integration and desegregation are commonly used to refer to the social processes that occur when people with different backgrounds mix. Integration is the mixing and coming together of groups or things, like putting a bunch of puzzle pieces together until the entire picture is clear. Desegregation is the separation and splitting up of groups or things, such as breaking a puzzle picture into pieces, you can put together a new one.

Both processes bring together people with different backgrounds and cultures, but they both also have unique processes. The difference between integration and desegregation is the methods used to bring the groups together.
