What is the Difference Between Data Table and Pivot Table

Irrespective of their size; Businesses require to keep the track of their data; and analyze it to keep their business growing. There are many tools and software developed to organize and analyze data. A data table and pivot tables are two options that help organize data and summarize it so that the data is kept organized and accessible for the business to use whenever they want to.

Data Table v/s Pivot Table

The main difference between a data table and a pivot table is that: a data table consists of columns and rows that collide in cells along with a header row: that has column names for making it easier to understand. On the other hand, the pivot table has rows, columns, and data fields in which column is for a ship date, the row is for the region, and the data is for units.

A data table is known as the lowest common denominator in business intelligence. Although the role of the data table is more to the reporting side than the analysis, it still plays a crucial role in BI. Data tables can store large numbers in an easy format and they also can build data summaries for making Analysis easier.

A pivot table consists of grouped values that collect specific items of a more comprehensive table like a spreadsheet, BI program, or database into one or more distinct groups. The summary of the pivot table includes averages, sums, and other statistics that are grouped by the pivot table by selecting a specific aggregation function.

Comparison Table Between Data Table and Pivot Table

What is Data Table?

The data table is: known to be the basic building block for BI. A data table consists of columns and rows that bisect cells. It also has a header row that indicates the names of the columns, which makes the table understandable. A data table is also known: as a tabular report in business intelligence; and is primarily used for recording information.

A data table is a primary tool used in BI yet most useful. The data table is capable of storing large data files and records easily. This is the main reason that the Excel spreadsheet is still well-known and is going to remain the same for a long time ahead. The records; entered in the data table stay saved for as long as the spreadsheet file is saved and is always accessible whenever required. The data table can also construct summaries of the data entered to make the process easier. It can also add a series of analysis capabilities like drill-down, drill-through, and sort.

When you add these features to your data table, they present the data more understandably. With all these benefits it comes: with a negative limitation that it has limited ability for making the main data jump out. The data tables present: a large number of data and leave it to the user to sift through it and analyze it.

What is Pivot Table?

A pivot table: is used for organizing, analyzing, and managing large data sets in dynamic ways. It is one of the: most useful data analyzing tools by Excel that is widely used: by financial analysts globally. In a pivot table: a database always runs behind the scenes allowing easy manipulation of excess information.

The first step for using a pivot table is to ensure that the available data is well-organized and can be converted into a dynamic table easily. It means that the data should be arranged in proper rows and columns, but if not arranged properly, the table won’t work properly. One should also ensure that the name of the categories is entered: in the top row of the dataset. After that, data is selected: that is to be added: to the table.

After selecting the data, in the Insert tab: you have to select the pivot table option. A dialog box appears on the screen where you need to ensure that everything is: correctly selected and then insert the table either as a new worksheet or somewhere on the current one. Once this step is completed: a pivot table will appear where you need to set the fields that are available by the drag and drop method. Other than the drag and drop method: you can also tick the options you want in the table.

Main Differences Between Data Table and Pivot Table

  1. A data table helps in keeping the data in a well-organized manner. On the other hand, a pivot table concludes the data and shows the summarised data.
  2. Data is used to place the data in tables. On the other hand, the pivot table is: used as a tool for organizing and analyzing information.
  3. The main advantage of using a data table is that: it has quick and easy reliability. On the other hand, a pivot table helps summarise data quickly.
  4. A data table only has a grid-like layout. On the other hand, a pivot table has Compact, Outline, and Tabular layouts.
  5. A data table has three major components which are: Table content, Column header, and Text alignment. On the other hand, a pivot table has four major components that are Rows, Columns, Values, Report Filter.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a data table and a pivot table are both used to store and analyze data. A data table has a row and column that consist of elements and members having those elements. On the other hand, pivot tables are a summarization tool that provides information about the data table. It has data summaries in the selected range of tables.

For example, if you want to know the color of Julia’s bike. You will have to look into the data table, and find “students” in the table; row for Julia and discover that it is blue. The data table will not tell you anything more about it. But if you want to know what percentage of people walk and how much: take bikes or buses to school, you will need to use a pivot table.
