When it comes to celestial bodies like comets and meteors, they both work as time capsules that comprise information related to our solar system’s history. As a result, it makes studies target a bit interesting. There are billions, probably trillions in the social system the rogue, objects orbiting the sun.
These kinds of spacefarers are mainly too small to be referred to as planets. Thus, they are named comet, meteor, etc. but with so many labels it is quite easy to forget which is which. In this article, the chief aim is on differentiating comets and meteors.
Comet vs Meteor
The main difference between comet and meteor is that there is a requirement for telescopes as most comets are failed to be visible through naked eyes. On the other hand, to watch a meteor shower there is no such requirement for the telescope.
When it comes to the core’s comet, they chiefly comprise dust and ice. According to NASA, this ice is chiefly composed of frozen water, while there can be other frozen substances such as ammonia, methane, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide. There is a range of comets orbiting the sun.
A meteor can be described as a meteoroid that has to go into the Earth’s atmosphere. Since meteors look like light’s streak, we also consider them shooting stars. Meanwhile, meteors are not stars. If a meteoroid hits the Earth’s atmosphere it usually vaporizes and results in a meteor.
Comparison Table Between Comet and Meteor
What is Comet?
A comet can be described as an icy and small solar system body. When passing near to the sun, the comet warms and starts to release gases. This results in a coma or visible atmosphere and sometimes a tail. The phenomena are due to the solar wind acting upon the comet’s nucleus and the solar radiation’s effects.
The coma might be up to 15 times the diameter of the earth, whereas the tail might stretch beyond the astronomical unit as one. In case, significantly bright it might be seen from the earth and without the telescope’s aid and might subtend an arc of 60 moons across the sky.
Since ancient times, the comets have been recorded and observed by many religions and cultures. Comet has an orbital period’s generally ranging from several years to millions of years. The origin of the small comet is traced in the Kuiper belt or its linked scattered disc.
In the Oort cloud, the long-period comets are thought to originate. They are set in motion from the Oort cloud towards the sun by gravitational perturbations led by the galactic tide and passing stars. Hyperbolic comets might pass through the inner solar system once.
What is Meteor?
When a meteoroid launches into the upper atmosphere of earth it heats caused by the air’s friction. Around the meteoroid, the heat causes gases to glow brightly, and also meteor appears. They are often referred to as falling stars due to the light’s bright tail.
Above the Earth’s surface, most meteorites occur in about 50- 80 kilometers in the mesosphere. From many meters away, even the smallest meteors are visible because of how brightly they shine and how far they travel. The fastest meteors travel at 44 miles per second speed.
The larger and faster the meteor, the longer and brighter it might blow. For approx a second, the smallest meteor only glows, whereas a faster and larger meteor is visible for several minutes. At night, they are observed best when the light’s streaks are visible in the dark.
Meteors appear in distinctive colors up to the chemical composition of the air and space rock it is passing through. For instance, yellow color appears in a meteor of high iron content. Meteors are mainly considered by their proximity to earth brightness and size.
Main Differences Between Comet and Meteor
- Comet can be described as a cosmic object generally made of gases, dust, rock, and ice that orbits the sun. On the flip side, a meteor is a meteoroid that launches into the atmosphere of the earth.
- Around 500 BC, Greek natural gospel named comet by using the Creek word namely, kometes generally means a head with long hair. Meanwhile, the word meteor originated from the Greek word meteoron later in modern Latin as meteorum.
- Some of the famous comet names comprise comet Lovejoy, Halley’s comet, comet PanSTARRS, comet Johnson and comet 41P. On the other hand, hoba, lenoids, cape york, campo del Cielo, and northern Taurids are some of the names of a meteor.
- The instance of word comet usage in a sentence is that “land’s memory in Arkansas streaked across Laura’s mind like a comet.” On the contrary, “Ray’s attention was caught on the meteor shower’s falling stars.”
- When it comes to the usage of the telescope, most comets are failed to be visible through naked eyes and there is a requirement for viewing through telescopes. In contrast, to watch a meteor shower there is no such requirement for the telescope.
Conclusion
It can be concluded that both comet and meteor work as time capsules that comprise information related to our solar system’s history. The discovery of the comet is traced back to 1892 when it was discovered by Edward Barnard. On the contrary, the discovery of meteor is traced back to 1959. In 1680, the first comet was founded namely, the great comet.
Meanwhile, in 1400, Elbogen was the first meteor to be discovered. The size of a comet generally ranges from 750 meters or less to about 20 kilometers. Conversely, in diameter between 30 micrometers and one meter is the meteor size range. The visibility is even from earth no matter comet if is very far. On contrary, the visibility of a meteor is only when it is present in the earth’s atmosphere.
