Mark Ramprakash, the cricket legend and former Strictly Come Dancing winner, shares a personal story that serves as a crucial reminder about the importance of heart health. Reflecting on the scare he experienced when his father, Deonarine, suffered a stroke in 2012, Mark is now using his platform to raise awareness about cholesterol and cardiovascular issues.
In 2012, Mark vividly recalls the fear that gripped him when his father had a stroke and struggled with impaired speech. Fortunately, Deonarine, then 70 years old, recovered from the ordeal. However, this health scare shed light on other underlying conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, which may have contributed to the stroke.
Mark’s family background is diverse; while his mother is Caucasian, his father is Indo-Guyanese. This multicultural heritage has made Mark aware of the increased risk of cardiovascular issues among people of South Asian heritage, who are more susceptible to strokes and heart problems.
To address this issue and raise awareness about cholesterol and heart health, Mark Ramprakash has thrown his support behind the “Get Back in the Game” campaign, launched by Novartis UK and Heart UK.
“I think I’ve not really been aware of cholesterol in the past… and the different types of cholesterol,” Mark explains. Cholesterol is a fatty substance in the blood, and elevated levels can lead to narrowed arteries and an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. A recommended total cholesterol level is below 5mmol/L, yet half of British adults have levels that exceed this threshold.
Mark, at 53 years old, acknowledges that this health scare and his family’s South Asian heritage have prompted him to rethink his lifestyle choices. His 25-year career as a professional sportsman emphasized the importance of physical fitness and nutrition. While he never consumed alcohol and is a non-smoker, he does admit to having a sweet tooth, which he tries to manage.
Throughout the pandemic, Mark’s gym routine and nutrition habits took a hit, but he has since re-established efforts to maintain a healthier lifestyle. He emphasizes the need for awareness of sugar intake and forming better habits.
In his efforts to maintain a heart-healthy diet, Mark has been cooking healthily, incorporating foods like brown toast, honey, scrambled eggs, chicken, fish, vegetables, and salads. He has also swapped out sweet treats for fruit salads when enjoying a coffee.
Currently working as a TV pundit and batting coach at Middlesex, Mark Ramprakash is back at the gym twice a week, engaging in basic strength and core exercises. He enjoys a round of golf once a week, which provides both exercise and relaxation.
Sleep is a priority for Mark, with nearly eight hours a night being his ideal. He underscores the significant impact of good sleep on his overall well-being.
Considering meditation for mental health, Mark appreciates the value of activities like Strictly Come Dancing for escaping the pressures of everyday life and recommends it for those seeking a mental respite.
As part of his advocacy, Mark urges people to get their cholesterol levels tested, as many individuals may not be aware that their cholesterol levels are higher than recommended. Regular measurements can reveal the need for potential lifestyle changes to ensure heart health.
Mark Ramprakash’s personal experience with his father’s stroke has inspired him to become a vocal advocate for heart health and cholesterol awareness. His journey towards a healthier lifestyle serves as an example of the importance of staying vigilant about our well-being, no matter our age or background.
