What happens if you overdose on lantus

What happens if you take too much long acting insulin?

Excess insulin in the bloodstream causes cells in your body to absorb too much glucose (sugar) from your blood. It also causes the liver to release less glucose. These two effects together create dangerously low glucose levels in your blood. This condition is called hypoglycemia.

If your pet is given too much insulin, life-threatening hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can result. Contact your veterinarian immediately. If your veterinarian is not available, seek other veterinary advice at once. Your pet may need to be hospitalized for observation or management.

Is 6 units of insulin a lot?

You may need it if long-acting insulin isn’t enough. The right dose depends on your target blood sugar level, how many carbs you’re eating, and how active you are. You might start with four to six units of insulin. Your dose may go up two to three units every 3 days until you reach your blood sugar target.

Can Lantus cause heart failure?

Fluid retention may lead to or exacerbate heart failure. Patients treated with insulin, including Lantus, and a PPAR-gamma agonist should be observed for signs and symptoms of heart failure.

People with diabetes may use insulin to lower their blood sugar. If their blood sugar gets too low after eating due to excess insulin, they may experience heart palpitations.

Can taking too much insulin affect your heart?

The new study, led by Abel and Kevin Xiang at UC Davis, shows that too much insulin in the blood (hyperinsulinemia) contributes to heart failure by triggering a molecular chain reaction that damages heart muscle cells.
