Zobedya Esquerra was waiting for her boyfriend outside the O’Riley Auto Shop car park on Geer Road and Wayside Drive in Turlock.
Juan Francisco Ibarra-Tapia, the suspect shot Esquerra and two others who were in the car with her. After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in his vehicle before crashing into a residential neighborhood.

Zobeyda Esquerra was a 22-year-old who was shot on Geer Road and Wayside Drive on Tuesday. She was immediately taken to the nearest hospital where she died of her wounds.
Some passing police officers heard the gunshots and chased the suspect through town. They had a 2-mile chase before the suspect crashed his vehicle and ran to hide abandoning his vehicle.
The neighborhood where the suspect’s car crashed went on a brief lockdown after he started jumping fences. The search came to an end after one of the residents saw him hiding in the bushes and alerted the officers.

Juan Franciso Ibarra-Tapia has been identified as the suspect who was involved in the shooting of Zobeyda Esquerra. They were former co-workers.
Tapia, 22, was previously arrested for stalking Esquerra in 2021. However, he was released on bail and the fees are unknown at the moment.
Following the incident, Tapia has been charged with multiple felonies that include, one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of firearm discharge in the commission of a felony, and one count of evasion. He was taken to the Stanislaus County Jail and is being held without bail.
