What Happened to Laura Kucera?

Laura Jean Kucera was born August 17, 1975, in Columbus, Nebraska. She became known nationally after surviving a kidnapping and shooting by an ex-boyfriend in 1994. Her story later inspired the 2019 Netflix film Only Mine.

What Happened to Laura Kucera?

Laura Kucera was a young Nebraska woman abducted at gunpoint by her ex-boyfriend, Brian Anderson, on October 1, 1994. He shot her twice in the head and once in the shoulder, then left her in a ditch near Wakefield, Nebraska.

She survived four days in cold October weather before Anderson led police to her. In fact, doctors and investigators were shocked to find her still alive.

Kucera spent 51 days in the hospital relearning to use her hands and walk again. Less than a year later, she died in a car accident on her way to visit her grandmother.

Early Life of Laura Kucera

Kucera was born on August 17, 1975, in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska. Her parents were David J. Kucera and Mary Kucera, and family members knew her by the nickname Giz.

She grew up in a large family. Kucera had two sisters, Sabrina and Dorothy, along with five brothers named Joseph, Mathew, Charles, Benjamin, and Patrick.

Kucera graduated from Wakefield High School in 1994. Soon after, she enrolled as a freshman at Wayne State College in Nebraska.

She spent her entire life within Nebraska, moving between Columbus and Wakefield. Friends and family later remembered her as strong-willed throughout her recovery.

Laura Kucera Age

Laura Kucera was 20 years old when she died on September 13, 1995. She was born under the zodiac sign of Leo, having entered the world on August 17, 1975.

Her death came about a year after the shooting that first brought her story to public attention. She had only just begun college when the attack occurred in October 1994.

Laura Kucera Ethnicity and Nationality

Kucera was an American citizen, born and raised entirely within the state of Nebraska. She was of Caucasian background, with Bohemian and Czechoslovakian heritage on her father’s side.

Her family had deep roots in the Columbus and Wakefield areas of Nebraska. That regional upbringing placed her within a large, close-knit family throughout her short life.

Laura Kucera Education

Kucera attended and graduated from Wakefield High School in Wakefield, Nebraska, in 1994. She then enrolled at Wayne State College, a public university in Wayne, Nebraska.

She was a freshman there when she died in 1995. Her time at Wayne State College came just months after she survived the shooting that nearly took her life.

The Kidnapping and Shooting

Kucera’s relationship with Brian Anderson began in 1994, when she was 19 years old. Anderson, then 22, grew increasingly controlling as the relationship progressed.

A Troubled Relationship

After Kucera ended the relationship, Anderson began stalking and threatening her. As a result, she obtained a restraining order against him.

Anderson later served a short jail sentence for violating that order. He was released from jail just before the October 1994 attack took place.

The Abduction

On October 1, 1994, Anderson kidnapped Kucera at gunpoint in Wakefield, Nebraska. He drove her toward a secluded area near Macy, Nebraska, on the Omaha Indian Reservation.

When Kucera refused to reconcile with him, Anderson shot her twice as she tried to run. He also shot her once in the shoulder before leaving her in a ditch.

Anderson initially told police he had dropped Kucera off at a restaurant in South Sioux City. After an unsuccessful search the first day, he confessed and led authorities to where he had left her.

Hospitalization and Recovery

Rescuers found Kucera alive after four days in a ditch, wearing only a t-shirt and shorts in the cold October weather. She was airlifted to a hospital in Sioux City, Iowa.

Kucera spent 51 days in the hospital recovering from her injuries. Doctors noted paralysis on her left side, and she had to relearn how to use her right arm.

Through physical therapy, she regained the use of her hands. She also learned to walk again before her release from the hospital on November 19, 1994.

Trial and Sentencing of Brian Anderson

Brian Anderson pleaded guilty to attempted kidnapping and use of a firearm to commit a felony. Kucera testified about the attack in court on March 3, 1995.

In May 1995, Judge Maurice J. Redmond sentenced Anderson in Ponca, Nebraska. The judge called Anderson a bully and a coward, sentencing him to at least 85 years in prison.

Kucera said she was relieved the case had ended. She told reporters she could finally stop looking over her shoulder for Anderson.

Laura Kucera’s Death

Laura Kucera died on September 13, 1995, in a car accident. She was on her way to visit her grandmother when her car ran off a gravel road.

Her vehicle rolled after leaving the road near Wakefield, Dixon County, Nebraska. She died about one year after surviving the shooting that had made her story known nationally.

News of her death spread through the Associated Press soon after the accident. Her passing came less than five months after Anderson’s sentencing that same year.

Local advocacy groups in Nebraska later used her story to raise awareness about dating violence. Haven House Family Service Center, based in Wayne, Nebraska, has referenced her case in materials marking the anniversary of the attack.

Only Mine (2019 Film)

Kucera’s story loosely inspired the 2019 film Only Mine, which began streaming on Netflix that year. Director Michael Civille led the project, based on a script by Matt Young.

Actress Amber Midthunder played the fictional lead character, Julie Dillon. Brett Zimmerman played her obsessive boyfriend, a police officer named David in the film.

The film changes many details from Kucera’s real story. In Only Mine, the attacker is a police officer, and the fictional Julie survives to kill her abuser herself.

Kucera’s real story ended differently. She did not confront her attacker, and the court system delivered justice through Anderson’s criminal sentencing instead.

The film closes with a dedication to Kucera. It reads, in part, that she was kidnapped, shot, and left to die, but she lived, and that Anderson remains in prison to this day.

The Bottom Line

Laura Kucera survived a kidnapping and shooting by her ex-boyfriend, Brian Anderson, in October 1994, then spent 51 days recovering in the hospital. Her testimony helped convict Anderson, who received a sentence of at least 85 years in prison in May 1995.

She grew up in a large Nebraska family with two sisters and five brothers, splitting her short life between Columbus and Wakefield. Kucera had just started college at Wayne State when the attack upended her life.

Her story later reached new audiences through the 2019 Netflix film Only Mine, though the movie changed many real details. Kucera died in a car accident in September 1995, about a year after she survived the shooting that first drew public attention to her case.
