F1 Mechanic Remembers Zolder Accident In Belgium

Dave Luckett remembered that day and frequently told about the incident that happened in the Zolder circuit that day. However, the mechanic is no more with us, and he died in 2021.

Dave came onto the circuit to restart the car from behind during the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix, a Formula One motor race.

Despite his presence and Patrese’s gestures, the Clerk of the Course had already initiated the sequence to start the race, and the race proceeded.

Siegfried Stohr, the other Arrows driver, collided with Luckett at the back of his teammate’s car.

Luckett was injured in the event and suffered a shattered leg and lacerations, but he survived. The 5th race of the 1981 Formula One World Championship was held on this day.

As of 2022, it was Carlos Reutemann’s last of 12 triumphs and the previous win for an Argentine driver.

Where Is Dave Luckett Now?

Despite surviving the fatal accident in 1981, Dave Luckett died in June 2021. He died at the age of 72.

The Riccardo Patrese Arrows-Ford had Luckett as their chief technician in 1981. Silence for a minute was observed to commemorate Amadeo’s death.

All of the technicians and some drivers stood on the grid before the Belgian race to protest the lack of safety for team members.

Following these accidents, the mechanics for the other teams began to protest the safety precautions in place to protect them and were soon joined by numerous drivers who abandoned their vehicles.
