What does 50 effaced mean

Once your cervix has started to dilate and efface, labor is approaching. However, if you are just 1 to 2 centimeters dilated, or below 50 percent effaced, it could still be days or weeks before labor actually starts.

Some women begin to efface and dilate weeks or months before labor, while others may not have any effacement or dilation at all until labor begins. At 50% effaced, the baby could be weeks away, or days; there’s no way to tell.

When you reach 50%, you’re halfway to where you have to be, and your cervix is about half the size and thickness it was before. When the cervix feels as thin as paper, you are 100% or fully effaced. Once effacement is complete, the cervix can fully dilate or open up for birth.

Effacement means that the cervix stretches and gets thinner. Dilatation means that the cervix opens. As labor nears, the cervix may start to thin or stretch (efface) and open (dilate). This prepares the cervix for the baby to pass through the birth canal (vagina).

If you are 1 cm dilated or are 50 per cent effaced, this means that your body has started getting ready for labor and delivery. At this stage, your cervix not only starts opening up but also thinning, so that the baby can move easily from the uterus through the birth canal.

This is also referred to as 50 percent effaced. As the cervix continues to shorten, the cervix is gradually drawn up by the uterus, and by the time it is 100 percent effaced, the cervix will have started to open. … It’s not uncommon to see someone be 2-3cm dilated and 50-60% effaced when labor starts.”

It may be hard to talk or move easily. At this point, your cervix will be dilated 3-10 centimeters. (Dilating 1 cm/hr is textbook, but like in early labor, it’s different for every woman.)
