Too Hot To Handle is a reality TV dating game show produced by Talkback, Thames, and Fremantle production companies.

The eight-episode Season one, created by Laura Gibson and Charlie Bennett, was first released on Netflix on April 17, 2020.

The format of the show is that a group of ten individuals live together in a villa and go through many workshops, all while being prohibited from any kissing, physical contact, or self-gratification.

Hosted by a virtual assistant named ‘Lana’, the monetary prize that is $200,000 at the beginning gets deducted every time a rule is broken.

The robot assistant keeps a record of every activity and doesn’t hesitate to deduct an amount from the prize money in case of any default by the players.

The motive behind such a concept is to generate a genuine connection. Every season begins with ten contestants, and some more are added occasionally.

The show is on par with Love Is Blind and is somewhat inspired by Big Brother.

As per Charlie Bennett, director of development at Talkback, the show was inspired by one episode of ‘Seinfeld’ called “The Contest.”

Altogether there are five seasons to date, with forty-three episodes so far. The fifth season premiered on July 14, 2023, with ten episodes.

What Do They Eat On Too Hot To Handle?

They eat food prepared by chefs on Too Hot To Handle. Each contestant has their own five-star chef to prepare food for them.

Harry Jowsey from Season 1 revealed that “It was the best food I ever has in my life.”

The participants would request snacks like deep-fried Oreos, and the chef would happily bring them in affluence.

Just like the other popular dating show, Love Island, the cast in Too Hot To Handle had a group dinner together every night.

This part of the day was away from cameras with no mic and just food. They were however not allowed to talk about the drama that was going on in the villa.

A cleaning team was also present at their service. The show is hosted by a virtual assistant Lana who records every detail part of the show.

Apart from delicious meals, the cast was allowed liquors in moderation. The show limits the intake of the cast to just two drinks max.

However, alcohol is not given whenever asked but only during parties or dinners where the contestants are invited.

In other cases, they can still enjoy tasty foods with soft drinks.

The food was also served in style, as revealed by season 2 participant Peter Vigilante. The food came in a food elevator from the kitchen and it was obviously gourmet.

As per Emily Miller, Season 2 contestant, the kitchen did not have any cameras so lots of conversations took place there. Fans have no idea what their favorite contestants talk about.

Do They Know They Are On Too Hot To Handle?

No, the contestants do not know they are going on Too Hot To Handle. The contestants sign up for different series.

People who end up on this show do not know that they are going on the show. The show tries to surprise them by inviting them to different shows.

The contestants are completely off guard to know the truth. This might not be the experience some want.

Larissa Trownson, Season 2 contestant, revealed how she was misled about the show. The producers told her that ‘if a boy or girl who got to the end who could party the hardest would win $100,00.”

This might be one of the strategies of the show to keep its business private and unique.

How Long Do They Stay On Too Hot To Handle?

There is no fixed day or week they stay on Too Hot To Handle. Season 4 was filmed for 3-4 weeks.

The show is all about hot singles who compete for a $200,000 prize while maintaining certain boundaries with each other.

The stay may differ for some individuals on the show. For instance, wildcards are bought to spice things up on the show, and they eventually end up with less time.

The filming usually finishes within one month, which leaves few singles at the retreat for a few weeks only.

The crew of the show had an interview with People after its Season 1 success, and the producer Louise Peet shared some insight about the timeline.

“We went to Mexico for a month, and we were filming for about 21 to 25 days in April 2019,” she said. “We wanted it to feel otherworldly.”

This show is different from other likely shows as it does not reveal to viewers the passage of time. We don’t know what day or week the contestant has reached.

Charlie Bennett, director of development at Talkback, said, “We didn’t want to feel like other reality shows, where it’s day three or day four. There wasn’t that kind of structure.”

Having said that, the singles are fully monitored by the cameras. They are even filmed in the shower to avoid the risk of physical intimacy.

They are not allowed phones, Ipads, or books. David Birtwistle from Season 1 describes his stay as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The contestants are free to leave, just like Matthew from Season 1.

Likewise, a showrunner can eliminate people who are contributing less, according to her, just like Haley from Season 1.

How Much Do Too Hot To Handle Contestants Get Paid?

The contestants on Too Hot To Handle do not get paid per episode. They get paid the prize money of $200,000.

The contestants are convinced of the promise of large amounts of platform and success resulting from featuring on the show. However, they get a chance to win the grand prize.

The twist is that it is quite difficult to earn the whole $200,000. One of the compulsory rules of the show is no kissing, not indulging in physical acts and self-gratification.

Their actions are thoroughly monitored by many cameras on the show and its crew. If any of the rules are compromised, a certain amount is deducted from the prize money and it is deducted for all.

A certain amount is deducted depending upon the act.

Cam Holmes and Emily Miller from Season 2 are the first contestants to break the rule by kissing twice and deducting $6000.

He was charged another $4,000 for crab grab and $2,000 for taking extra time in the shower.

The couple charged another $5,000 in the private suite act with $17,000 in total.

The other cast Melinda Melrose was punished with $26,000 but earned back $25,000.

The one who made the biggest-ever tab at Lana’s expense by spending $141,000 is Holly Scarfone and Nathan Soan Mngomezulu.
