Born in Glasgow in 1976 as Barry Zonfrillo, he began working in kitchens at the age of 13 and, at 15, began his apprenticeship at the Turnberry Hotel, becoming one of the establishment’s youngest-ever apprentices.
He started working for renowned British chef Marco Pierre White when he was 17 years old. Zonfrillo disclosed that he was homeless and dependent on heroin at the time in his 2021 autobiography Last Shot. When he was only 22 years old, he was named head chef of the Tresanton Hotel in Cornwall.
Zonfrillo was hired as Sydney’s Forty One’s head chef in 2000, but he was let go in 2002 after intentionally setting fire to an apprentice’s clothing.
In 2007, Zonfrillo was sued and awarded $75,000 in damages by the apprentice. The same year, Zonfrillo filed for bankruptcy. A number of eateries, including Restaurant Orana, Street ADL, Bistro Blackwood, and Nonna Mallozzi, were subsequently opened by him in Adelaide.
The Good Food Guide and Gourmet Traveller magazines have named Restaurant Orana Australia’s Restaurant of the Year in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Despite receiving three hats in 2019 and 2020, it was forced to close in March of that year.
In 2019, Zonfrillo took the place of the program’s original hosts, Matt Preston, George Calombaris, and Gary Mehigan, as a judge on MasterChef Australia.
