Wendy Petrie has been a presenter on Television New Zealand’s One News at 6 p.m. since January 2006, when she joined forces with co-presenter Simon Dallow. Following Judy Bailey’s departure from her role as main female anchor (which she had held for 18 years), she was appointed to the post. Judy departed when modifications to the presenter structure of the 6pm bulletin resulted in one anchor covering the whole bulletin. Following Bailey’s departure, the decision was overturned and the task was given to two new presenters (mainly due to a fall out with TVNZ over her treatment publicly, regarding her pay). Wendy had previously worked for TVNZ for two years, most recently as the “swing” presenter for all of the One News bulletins. formerly worked as a weekend presenter for 3 News before moving to Canada where she worked as a newsreader for CTV News Channel and a replacement broadcaster on CTV’s morning show Canada AM. Before returning to New Zealand to begin working for TVNZ, she lived in the United Kingdom for three years. Over the course of her stay in Canada, she made many appearances on the nationally syndicated Travel World Radio Show, which was hosted by experienced travel broadcasters Stephen Pickford and Willem Bagchus, in which she spoke about and promoted her native New Zealand. Petrie was the first person to call TVNZ about the aircraft that had just crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City on September 11, 2001, according to Petrie. Later that evening, she appeared on the 6 o’clock news to provide an update on the day’s happenings. Petrie has been in nearly every One News programme since the beginning of 2004, including the main show, and has become a familiar face. Described as “a catastrophe magnet,” she was filling in on One News over Christmas when the tsunamis hit on Boxing Day, which she was covering. During the London Bombings, she was stepping in for Kate Hawkesby (who was hosting One News Tonight at the time), and she provided live coverage of the incident. While co-hosting TVNZ’s Breakfast in September 2009, a massive earthquake and tsunami in the South Pacific caused extensive devastation in neighbouring Samoa, which Petrie was covering for the network. She was also flown to Valencia, Spain, to cover the America’s Cup, which took place in 2007. Petrie is married to Ross Peebles, who works as a business director. They are the parents of three children, Addison, Liv, and Zachary (born January 31, 2010).
