Was Lafayette City Prosecutor Gary Haynes Arrested? Secretary And Wife Barna Haynes Charged For Bribery

Gary Haynes is a well-known name in the media, who roses to fame as the prosecutor of Lafayette city. Additionally, he is also an assistant district lawyer.

Haynes made headlines at the beginning of the year when he was reportedly put on administrative leave.

It occurred a day after federal law enforcement officers were spotted conducting an investigation into the 15th Judicial District Attorney’s Office at the Lafayette Parish Courthouse.

Was Lafayette City Prosecutor Gary Haynes Arrested?

Some ongoing rumors suggest Lafayette city prosecutor, Gary Haynes, was arrested for his involvement in the OWI conspiracy.

Let us clarify that it was reported wrong as Gary wasn’t the one who was arrested, it was his wife, Barna.

As per thecurrentla, Gary’s wife, Barna D. Haynes, the former secretary of Harson, received an 18-month federal jail term in 2015 for her involvement in the OWI fraud.

Days after his wife acknowledged accepting bribes to get OWIs dismissed, Harson brought Gary Haynes to court to prosecute OWIs and permitted individuals convicted in the vast pay-for-plea conspiracy to train their successors.

Lafayette City Prosecutor Gary Haynes’ Wife Barna Haynes Sentenced For Bribery

Following the allegation of OWI fraud, Gary Haynes’ wife Barna Haynes was sentenced to eighteen months in jail.

In July 2015, U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Foote also ordered Barna a $5,000 fine concerning a bribery case involving the Lafayette, Louisiana, district attorney’s office.

ACADIANA ADVOCATE reported that authorities claimed Barna served as the primary contact person in the district attorney’s office for Robert Williamson, the Lafayette private detective accused of planning the scam.

In June 2015, when a jury was chosen for Williamson’s trial, he entered a guilty plea to multiple conspiracies, bribery, and Social Security fraud.

Authorities allege that bribes were also given to have crimes dropped in addition to the special DWI pleas that allowed for charges to be rapidly resolved and erased from the available court documents.

According to evidence by FBI agent Doug Herman, Barna allegedly threatened one attack victim with criminal charges if she did not withdraw a claim against one of Williamson’s clients.

At the same time, Herman claimed that during one of the numerous calls between Haynes and Williamson that the FBI allegedly secretly recorded, she heard pleading with him to start referring more cases her way so they may start saving up for the next vacations.

Where Is Prosecutor Gary Haynes Now?

No charges of bribery were brought against Gary Haynes and he serves in a dual position as Lafayette’s contract municipal prosecutor.

The details of Gary’s current circumstance haven’t been addressed; however, he was put on unpaid leave in May due to a pending federal investigation.

His yearly salary of $65,000 for that position, where he was in charge of misdemeanor OWI, traffic cases, and pretrial diversion, was terminated by the Guillory administration in July while it awaited the results of the raid.

In a statement, Jamie Angelle, chief communications officer for Lafayette Consolidated Government, said he could not clarify whether Haynes’ absence is connected to Monday’s investigation.

His wife Barna risked a sentence of 30 to 37 months in prison under the suggested standards applied for federal sentencing.

However, Foote argued that considering Haynes’ age, absence of criminal history, and precarious health, an 18-month prison term was fair.
