On October 24, 2008, a chilling incident unfolded in Chicago, Illinois, as the lives of 29-year-old Jason Hudson and his mother, Darnell Donerson, were tragically cut short. The mother and brother of acclaimed singer Jennifer Hudson became victims of a heinous crime, their lives taken in a senseless act of violence within Donerson’s home.
The investigation that followed revealed the devastating toll on Jennifer’s family. As if the loss of her brother and mother wasn’t enough, Jennifer’s seven-year-old nephew, Julian King, the son of her elder sister Julia Hudson, was reported missing. The desperate search for Julian prompted the issuance of an AMBER Alert. The grim discovery came on October 27 when Julian King’s lifeless body was found in a parked car on Chicago’s West Side, matching the description in the AMBER Alert. Autopsy results revealed that Julian had succumbed to “multiple gunshot wounds,” marking a heart-wrenching end to the young boy’s life.
The murder weapon, a pistol, was later found in a vacant lot on the West Side and confirmed by Chicago police as the instrument used in the tragic events.
The investigation took a significant turn when Julia Hudson’s estranged husband, William Balfour, 27, was taken into custody on the same day the bodies were discovered. Balfour, who confessed to the crime, had a troubled history, spending nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking, and possession of a stolen vehicle. Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections indicated that one of Balfour’s addresses matched the location of the double homicide.
Despite Balfour’s admission and the mounting evidence against him, the legal proceedings faced challenges. The initial 48-hour custody limit passed, leading to Balfour being held on a parole violation while investigators continued to build their case.
The arrest finally came on December 1, 2008, when Balfour was charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Donerson, Jason Hudson, and Julian King, along with a count of felony home invasion. During a court hearing on December 3, prosecutors alleged that Balfour committed the murders out of anger over his estranged wife’s new relationship. Balfour, represented by attorney Joshua Kutnick, maintained his innocence throughout the legal proceedings.
The trial concluded in May 2012, with Balfour being convicted and sentenced to three life sentences plus 120 years. The impact of this tragedy led Jennifer Hudson’s family to establish the Hudson-King Foundation for Families of Slain Victims, aiming to support families affected by violent crimes. The foundation stands as a testament to the resilience of a family that faced unimaginable loss and sought to turn their grief into a force for positive change.
