Gabriel Fernandez was systematically tormented and tortured throughout his eight-month stay in the home of Pearl Fernandez and Isauro Aguirre.
Regular physical beatings resulted in shattered bones, as did being burned with cigarettes and shot with a BB pistol in various body parts, including the face and groin.
According to Fernandez’s siblings, his mother and stepfather would laugh while he was being abused.

On February 20, 2005, Gabriel Daniel Fernandez was born to Arnold Contreras and Pearl Fernandez.
Due to his grandfather’s opposition to Carranza and Martinez’s same-sex relationship, Gabriel, then four years old, moved in with his grandparents in 2009.
Until 2012, Gabriel resided with his grandparents when his mother and her boyfriend reclaimed physical custody of him.

Gabriel was abused and tortured over several months, culminating in his deadly beating on May 22, 2013, and died two days later.
He died at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles two days later, May 24, 2013.
On May 22, 2013, Pearl contacted 911 to report that her son was not breathing.
After failing to tidy up his toys, Fernandez was fatally beaten by his mother and Aguirre. When emergency responders arrived, they discovered him naked and injured on the ground.
Where Is She Now?
Isauro Aguirre was sentenced to death, and Pearl Fernandez was sentenced to life in jail without the chance of parole.
Fernandez is currently serving a life sentence without the possibility of release in the Central California Women’s Facility.
On April 8, 2021, Pearl Fernandez submitted a motion to be re-sentenced, but it was denied by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge George G. Lomeli.
