Vincent Lamont Mason Jr. is an American rapper, producer, and DJ who is a member of De La Soul. Mason’s aliases include Maseo, P.A. Pasemaster Mase, and Plug Three. When Mason joined Kelvin Mercer (“Posdnuos”, “Plug One”, “Plug Wonder Why”, “Mercenary”) and David Jude Jolicoeur (“Trugoy the Dove”, “Plug Two”, “Dave”) to form De La Soul in 1987, they were already friends.
With a demo recording of “Plug Tunin’,” the trio caught the attention of Prince Paul, then a member of Stetsasonic. Mason and his colleagues signed a record deal with the Tommy Boy label, and Paul produced their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising.
Mason’s primary function in De La Soul is as a DJ, and he describes himself as “a b-boy to my heart,” gaining inspiration from his own life experiences and current events on a worldwide scale. Mason has, however, also contributed vocals to songs like “Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)” from De La Soul Is Dead and for De La Soul’s cameo on the Jungle Brothers’ track “Doin’ Our Own Dang.” Mason also produced the opening chuckle for De La Soul and Gorillaz’s song “Feel Good Inc.”
