Vicki Anderson (born Myra Barnes) is a soul singer best remembered for her appearances with the James Brown Revue. She was born on November 21, 1939 in Houston, Texas. Under both her birth and stage identities, she released a number of singles. In his book, James Brown praises her as the greatest vocalist he’s ever had in his revue, and perhaps the best singer he’s ever seen. Anderson is the mother of Carleen Anderson Bartlett Anderson, James Byrd, Tony Byrd, and Keisha Byrd-Mckissack, and the widow of Bobby Byrd (the original creator of The Famous Flames). Anderson replaced Anna King as James’ primary female vocalist in 1965, and remained with him for three years until Marva Whitney replaced her in 1968. After Marva left,
she returned in 1969 and stayed for another three years until 1972, when Lyn Collins took over. Her most renowned song, the feminist hymn “The Message from the Soul Sisters,” was published in 1970. In 1975, Mommie -O released a single on James’ I-Dentify label, which included a version of Rufus’ song “Once You Get Started” and Bobby Womack’s “Stop On By” (which had recently been covered by Rufus). Vicki married Bobby Byrd, James Brown’s right-hand man, in the mid-1960s, and is the mother of Carleen and Jhelisa, both of whom rose to fame in the 1990s with a couple of excellent albums. Vicki toured the UK in the late 1980s with the James Brown Funky People Revue and again in the mid-1990s with her husband Bobby Byrd.
