Vera Nikolaevna Putina, who was born on September 6, 1926, achieved notoriety in 1999 after claiming to be the mother of Vladimir Putin, the Russian president. Putin’s official biography indicated that his parents had died before he became president, which was in conflict with this claim.
Putina’s assertions, according to The Telegraph, may be false or the product of a publicity stunt, but they nevertheless highlight the holes in the widely accepted account of Putin’s origins.
Putin’s parents, according to the official story, had already reached their forties when he was born, thus it had been more than ten years since the births of their earlier sons, Albert and Viktor, who sadly did not make it past childhood.
Putina lived in the Georgian village of Metekhi, which is 18 kilometers to the east of Gori in the Kaspi Municipality. She said that Platon Privalov, a Russian mechanic, was the father of Putin and that he had conceived her while he was still married to another woman.
During the academic year 1959–1960, a person by the name of “Vladimir Putin” registered at the Metekhi school; according to the records, he was of Georgian descent. Giorgi Osepahvili, a Georgian soldier whom Putina wed, put pressure on her to give up their son, Putin.
She sent “Vova” (a nick name for Vladimir) back to his Russian grandparents in December 1960. Putina thought that the St. Petersburg-based “adoptive parents” featured in Putin’s official biography were actually her son’s grandparents.
