There are three main varieties of pear trees: European, Asian, and hybrid. European pear varieties are the most classic examples of the pears you buy in the store.

Bartlett Pears / Williams Pears

Bartletts* are the juiciest pears when eaten raw. They can make a real mess but are so delicious when ripe and juicy, it’s worth the drip marks on your shirt. Since Barletts are so juicy, they lose their shape when cooked.

Pear Types

European, oriental hybrid and Asian pears are three main types of pears. Unlike other pear types, Asian pears will remain hard even when ripe. They are ready to eat off the tree and are best picked at their peak ripeness.

More likely than not, your pear is hard because it isn’t ripe. Unlike many other types of fruit, pears ripen after they’ve been picked. That means your pear will continue to ripen after you take it home. It’s also possible that your pear is a variety that’s naturally harder.

BARTLETT: This is the pear most of us got in our lunchboxes as kids. It has the classic pear shape and lime green to yellow skin (more golden when it’s super ripe). Bartletts are sweet, soft, and delicious, but you have to be careful they don’t get too ripe. They can go mushy (and bruise) pretty fast.

Unlike other tree-borne fruits (like apples), pears ripen after they’re harvested, not while nuzzled on the tree (via Harry & David). Once picked, growers and grocers keep the pears chilled, so they stay firm until you’re ready to ripen and enjoy at home.

Pears are an excellent source of soluble and insoluble fiber, which are essential for digestive health. As pear skin contains a substantial amount of fiber, it’s best to eat this fruit unpeeled ( 2 ).

As the fruit ripens, the green takes on a slightly yellow cast, the colors become gauzy and the skin develops a waxy finish. Ripe fruit will yield slightly to gentle pressure. Forelle Pears are best when just firm. Err on the side of firmness, rather than soft, to avoid a mouthful of mush.

Place underripe pears in a fruit bowl at room temperature near other ripening fruit like bananas, which naturally give off ethylene and will help speed up the ripening process. And if you find yourself with a few too many overripe pears, blend them into smoothies, soups, sauces and purees!

Answer: Consuming an unripe pear in small quantities is alright since there is also a variety of pear that is best eaten unripe. But for you to relish an unripe pear, you can prepare it first so you can enjoy it afterward.

With an unripe Bosc pear, you can make a simple treat with barely any preparation. Just slice them up, put them on a roasting pan, and check them every 20 minutes or so until they are soft.

Place the pears with ripe fruits only when they are to be eaten. Consume immediately after the pears turn ripe. ✴ An additional step to this method can be heating the pear in a microwave for about 10-15 seconds on moderate power before placing it with ripe fruits in a brown paper bag.

The fastest method: Paper bag and ripe apples

Place the pears in a paper bag, throw in a couple of ripe apples and set aside. Ethylene gas will naturally be emitted by the ripe apples, causing the pears to ripen much faster in 1-3 days.

For cooking, pears should generally be “firm-ripe,” or just at the beginning of the ripening window. In this case, look for ripe fruit that yields only slightly when pressed near the stem. If the pears are very hard when you buy them, they may need several days to ripen.
