Types of bread mold

Rhizopus, cosmopolitan genus of some 10 species of filamentous fungi in the family Rhizopodaceae (formerly Mucoraceae), in the order Mucorales. Several species, including Rhizopus stolonifer (the common bread mold), have industrial importance, and a number are responsible for diseases in plants and animals.

Fungi: Systematics

Fungi are usually classified in four divisions: the Chytridiomycota (chytrids), Zygomycota (bread molds), Ascomycota (yeasts and sac fungi), and the Basidiomycota (club fungi). Placement into a division is based on the way in which the fungus reproduces sexually.

Most types of mold are formed from threadlike organisms. While different types of mold can grow on all types of bread, some of the most common types of food-borne molds are Penicillium, Alternaria, Aspergillius, Botrytis, Mucor, Fusarium and Cladosporium.

Molds are typically identified based on their spores and the structures of the parts of the mold that produces the spores. Since the structure of the spore-forming component of the mold can really only be seen using a microscope, the focus here will be on the spores themselves for identifying the type of bread mold.

Also, FYI, toasting your bread will not kill the mold on it, so don’t even go there. Since bread is super porous, it’s definitely one to chuck at the first sign of fuzz, says the USDA.

The molds that grow in your mold terrarium feed on the bread, cheese, and other foods. A mold produces chemicals that make the food break down and start to rot. As the food is broken down into small, simple parts, the mold absorbs them and grows.

Of course if you make your own and skip the preservatives, the bread will mold even faster. Heat, humidity and light are all bad for bread but great for fungi or mold, so consider your fridge your best chance to keep your bread fresh and yummy. Tightly sealing the bread also helps slow the molding process.

They grow from spores which float in the air. Mould grows best in warm, dark and moist conditions. Bread moulds are in a category of living things and some can cause illness if eaten.

For food safety experts, the answer is clear: Moldy bread is bad news. Some molds, like those used for Gorgonzola cheese, are safe to eat. But the mold dotting bread isn’t a benign source of extra fiber. Gravely says people who eat moldy food may suffer allergic reactions and respiratory problems.

Mold grows from tiny spores that float around in the air. When some of these spores fall onto a piece of damp food, they grow into mold. A common mold that grows on bread looks like white cottony fuzz at first. If you watch that mold for a few days, it will turn black.

Cladosporium Bread Mold

Cladosporium molds usually appear on the surface of bread as dark patches that range in color from deep green to black. Cladosporium bread molds produce a noticeable odor, more so than other bread molds, which may help you to notice these molds before accidentally eating them.

Your body’s many systems will begin to deteriorate despite your body’s ability to continue for days and weeks without food and water. Some of the side effects of starvation include: faintness. dizziness.
