What are Goddess Braids?

Goddess braids are essentially thicker cornrows. They’re bigger in size, raised higher, and are also braided closely to your scalp. They can be styled in so many ways for every occasion; you can go from the gym, straight to work, then out to drinks, all while protecting your hair and looking superchic.

Why do you put mousse on braids?

You should put mousse on braids for two reasons; mousse acts as a bonding tool when braiding (as it helps make the hair easier to grip), and to help eliminate frizz. Although mousse can be used on both natural and extension braids, using too much will lead to unnecessary build-up and a bad odor forming on your braids.

Can I use mousse on my braids?

If you find yourself without it, the quickest way to correct frizz and keep that shine and sleekness is mousse or setting lotion, braiding spray, and a light pomade. Apply a styling mousse to your braids, then a braiding spray before tying it down tightly with a head scarf.

Why is my scalp so itchy after braids?

Braids take forever to dry, so it’s tempting to go for longer stretches between wash days. “Your scalp collects deceased skin cells, sebum and dust, which then becomes trapped at the roots and needs to be cleared as it can cause itchiness,” says trichologist Anabel Kingsley.

Should you oil your scalp everyday with braids?

Contrary to that, braided or twisted hair requires as much care as natural hair, especially when it comes to your scalp. You might not have to comb through but you will need to regularly oil to have a healthy scalp.

Gels are a great product to use on your box braids when you’re trying to get the synthetic braiding hair used to hold better. Taylor recommends applying the Ampro Pro Styl Shine ‘n Jam Conditioning Gel ($3) at the root of your scalp after parting each braid to get a better grip on the hair.

Is peppermint oil good for braids?

Peppermint oil is also able to absorb excess oil while still keeping your scalp moisturized in the process. If you want to apply the oil without making the roots of your hair all frizzy in the process, all you need to do is dip a couple of Q-tips in the oil and rub it along the parts in your hair.

Should I oil my hair before braiding?

Oiling the hair strands seals in the moisture so that your hair does not dry out. It should therefore be done on about 10% damp hair. Let the hair dry completely after oiling before proceeding to braiding. This will help you keep the braid tidy for longer since you won’t be scratching your scalp afterwards.

How often should you wash box braids?

To keep your hair healthy, Harris says you should wash your braids every two to three weeks. If you‘re not washing your hair and scalp, that means all of the buildup of products and dry skin just stays on your scalp, which can lead to flakes and itchiness.

When should you remove box braids?

When your roots start separating from the braid, due to growth, it’s time to remove. Because the new growth is hanging onto the braid, it’s prone to twisting and tangling.
