biography
The early life of Toussaint is not well documented, however, it is believed that he was born on May 20, 1743 to the West African king of Allada, Gaou Guinou. His family was sold into slavery and sent to the Caribbean.
Toussaint was fortunate to be bought by enlightened masters who enabled him to learn to read and write. He read the Enlightenment classics and political philosophers, who were his greatest influences. He grew up to be an expert in medicinal plants and horsemanship.
His master recognized this and promoted him tothe post of chief administrator of the plantation. He is said to have been liberated in 1776, the same year the United States declared its independence from Britain.
After his freedom, Toussaint worked for his former owner until August 1791The slave rebellion began in the northern province and soon spread to thousands of slaves throughout the colony.
Toussaint acted impassively at first but the riots intensified in the weeks that followed when he had to help his former master escape and then joined the black forces who burned plantations and killed many Europeans and mulattoes (people of mixed African and European descent). . He soon discovered the ineptness of the rebel leaders and despised their willingness to compromise with European radicals.
He then formed his own army and trained them in guerrilla warfare. In 1793 the black commanders joined the SpaniardsSanto Domingo when France and Spain went to war.
Toussaint displayed exceptional military skill, attracting such famous warriors as his nephew Moïse and two future monarchs of Haiti.Jean Jacques Dessalines andHenry Christophe. Its victories in the north, as well as the successes of the mulattoes in the south and the British occupation of the coasts, brought the French near doom.
He fought gallantly for freedom and used every positive tactic to achieve it. By 1795 he had achieved significant successes in the Haitian struggle for freedom.
Death
Toussaint was able to put up strong resistance For a few months, his coalition finally collapsed when most of the Europeans and mulattoes living on the island sided with the French, and in time even his best generals, Henri Christophe and Dessalines, followed. In June 1802, on the pretext of discussing peace, the French general Jean-Baptiste Brunet sent Toussaint a letter inviting him to his quarters.
There Toussaint was arrested and sent to Fort-de-Joux in the French Jura, where he was horribly interrogated. He finally died of pneumonia and starvation on April 7, 1803.
Black Napoleon is considered a strategist, visionary, formidable intellectual and warrior with a keen political flair. He was a disciplinarian to the core.
He was a brave man; He did a lot during his reign to fix the economy and people’s security. He was a staunch Roman Catholic who abhorred slavery and dedicated himself to the struggle for Haitian freedom.
In his dealings with his rivals, he was prudently discreet about his directions and intentions. Like Mandela in South Africa, Touissant preached reconciliation and believed that African-born blacks in the colony needed tolerance and learning from Europeans and mulattoes.
Black Napoleon’s belief in eradicating racial tension and slavery, as well as his firm foundation in training his guerrilla force, helped the colony resist attempts by French invasions even after his death in 1803. He was betrayed by his political comrades and handed over to the French government. He died in prison.
