Bethany, on October 31, 2003, when she was barely 13 years, went for a morning surf along Tunnels Beach, Kauai alongside her close friend Alana Blanchard, Alana’s father and brothers, Holt and Byron. There a 14-foot-long (4.3 m) tiger shark attacked her (severing her left arm just below the shoulder). Her friend then helped paddle her back to shore. Blanchard’s father fashioned a tourniquet out of a rash guard and wrapped it around the stump of her arm. She was then quickly rushed to Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
Bethany had lost over 60% of her blood by the time she arrived there. She was in hypovolemic shock. A doctor living in a hotel nearby raced to the rescue. Bethany’s father was to have knee surgery that morning. She has to take his place in the operating room. Bethany confirmed that she did not feel anything when she was bitten and did not feel much pain from the bite at the moment of the disaster. She said that she was felt numb on the way to the hospital.
The news went viral after a while. Ralph Young, who was a fisherman presented to investigators photos of a 14-foot-long (4.3 m) tiger shark. They had caught and killed the shark about one mile from the attack site. The shark had surfboard debris in its mouth. When the shark’s mouth measurements were taken and compared to get of Bethany, it matched. The police in the year 2004 officially confirmed that it was the same one that had attacked her.
Despite the fact that she has lost her left arm, she was determined to return to surfing. Bethany, returned on board one month aft6er the attack. She trained herself to surf with one arm and returned to surfing on November 26, 2003. This was barely 26 days after the attack. She entered her first major competition on January 10, 2004.
