Understand BAFTA
The BAFTA (British Academy Film and Television Awards), held each year in London, has existed for more than six decades and first began in 1947.
Founded by Alexander Korda, Carol Reed, Charles Laughton, David Lean, Roger Maxwell and others, it was formerly known as the British Film Academy. Over time, and with noticeable success, the organization merged with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors, formed in 1953. After both film organizations merged in 1958, they became the Film and Television Society that year. However, in 1976 the name BAFTA was adopted.
BAFTA recognizes and encourages those who make outstanding contributions to film, including UK and international stars. The primary goal of the award is to advance and improve the art forms of the moving image. The British Academy of Film and Television achieves this by rewarding brilliance and excellence. Designed by Mitzi Cunliffe, an American sculptor, the awards are shaped like a theatrical mask. The prestigious award has the same value as the Academy Awards.
