Steve Hodge’s net worth has soared after selling Diego Maradona’s famed ‘Hand of God’ jersey for nearly £7 million at auction.
Argentina had pleaded with former England player Steve Hodge to withdraw from a £5 million auction for Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey and instead sell it to them.
After scoring the two goals that defeated England in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, midfielder Hodge, now 59, switched jerseys with the icon.
And now, the shirt donned by Argentina star Diego Maradona when he defeated England with two of the most prominent strikes in football history has sold for more than £7 million at auction.
Steve Hodge’s Net Worth Is Up By 7 Million
Although Steve Hodge’s net worth has not been calculated, we can presume that following his £7 million bid, the former England star has garnered a hefty net worth.
Diego Maradona’s jersey, which he wore in the legendary ‘Hand of God’ match, sold for £7,142,500 at an auction that finished after a thrilling final nine minutes, setting a new auction benchmark for any piece of sports memorabilia.

Similarly, it was placed up for auction on April 20, and there was only one bid for £4 million, the reserve value, until 15:51 today, when a late bidder made a £4.2 million offer.
More and more offers were put in the last minutes of the auction. The garment sold for £7,142,500 after the auction finished at 4 p.m, as per ITV.
However, the buyer has opted to remain unidentified.

History Behind Maradona T-Shirt
After England’s elimination from the 1986 World Cup quarterfinal match in Mexico, Maradona switched his shirt with Nottingham Forest legend Steve Hodge in the tunnel.
Steve Hodge, a midfielder, accidentally flipped the ball to Maradona, who scored the Hand of God goal.
The game took place four years after the United Kingdom conquered Argentina in the Falklands War, and as a consequence, it had more resonance for both countries.
